A late decision was made by the Dubai Tennis organisers to expand the tournament to 64 players and that means a Sunday start at this event which is one of four events being played this week before both Tours meet up again in Miami at the first Masters of the 2021 season later this month.
The Middle East events always end on a Saturday so that is another reason there are some First Round matches set to be played in Dubai on Sunday. The WTA event came to an end with Garbine Muguruza winning a title having come close at the Australian Open and Doha to winning the titles at those events and the Spaniard is playing with the kind of confidence that will make her a serious threat to win Grand Slam titles if she maintain her levels.
Nikoloz Basilashvili was the surprise Champion at the ATP Doha event despite being in miserable form for a number of months. He beat Roger Federer and Roberto Bautista Agut in the tournament and it will be interesting to see if this was a flash in the pan for the Georgian or whether Basilashvili is ready to turn his Tennis around having been in an artificially high World Ranking thanks to the current system being used.
Friday was a very important day for the Tennis Picks as I finally turned the week around and produced a positive return in the results. Nothing stood out on Saturday and the Sunday Tennis Picks look to be focusing on the matches that are set to be played at the ATP Dubai event, which is part of the new week, and it at least means this is the first winning week of the season that has been placed in the books.
It gives me something to build on this week with another four tournaments set to be played and I should have some fuller threads beginning on Monday.
