WTA Finals Day 5 Tennis Picks 2025 (Wednesday 5th November)

The last couple of days at the WTA Finals have had some exciting matches, notably Aryna Sabalenka's latest win over Jessica Pegula, but only one player has confirmed their place in the Semi Final as the year comes to a close.

A second name will join Elena Rybakina at the end of play on Day 5 in Riyadh when the first of the two Groups come to a conclusion.

Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek are playing in the 'winner takes all' second Singles match on Day 5, while the other Group still has three players vying for two Semi Final places.

Jasmine Paolini is out after suffering a second defeat, but Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will be working through the permutations. There will be more thoughts on how those potentially shake up in the Day 6 thread, but in this one we are looking to build on the momentum earned from the two winners that were secured on Tuesday.

Those have just pulled the week back closer to where we would want to see it, although there are still four more days to complete at the WTA Finals and work to do in order to secure another strong week at the end of this 2025 season.

Elena Rybakina - 4.5 games v Madison Keys: There is no need to worry about any permutations in this WTA Finals Group as Elena Rybakina and Madison Keys begin Day 5 play.

The former has already secured top spot in the Group having beaten both Iga Swiatek and Amanda Anisimova, while Madison Keys will be exiting the event at the conclusion of this match.

Motivation is going to be tough to find as far as Madison Keys goes and that is because she has already taken some time away from the Tour after losing very early at the US Open. She returned to play in Riyadh, but two relatively comfortable losses has ended her participation before the Semi Final and the focus may already be on getting ready to defend the Grand Slam title she won in Melbourne.

Madison Keys has a big serve, but it has not been firing as she would have hoped and eleven breaks of serve have been handed out in the first two defeats. This has placed her return under pressure, but the lack of recent rhythm has worked against the American.

It has been a different story for Elena Rybakina who had to put some solid results on the board during the Asian swing following the US Open and only just secured her spot at the WTA Finals in mid-October. This has kept her mentally invested and it has to have helped in Elena Rybakina being able to crush her first two opponents to win the Group with a match to spare.

Elena Rybakina has won three of the last four matches played against Madison Keys and she will still have some real regret that the exception was the Fourth Round loss at the Australian Open back in January. It was a match in which Rybakina had looked the stronger player, but Madison Keys was able to come through having played the bigger points more effectively.

Since then, Rybakina has had revenge over Madison Keys by crushing her at the Cincinnati Masters in August, and she has proven to be the player that can get a bit more out of the serve in the head to head. Elena Rybakina has been considerably stronger on the serve in this tournament too and being able to roll through those games may allow the World Number 6 to just remain aggressive enough on the return to win the third Group match and cover what looks a big number on paper.

Amanda Anisimova + 3.5 games v Iga Swiatek: This is just the third career meeting between Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek and the previous two have been at the last two Grand Slam events played.

So this final Group match at the WTA Finals is not going to be nearly as important as the matches in the Wimbledon Final and US Open Quarter Final, but it is one that will decide which of the two players join Elena Rybakina in the Semi Final.

The Wimbledon Final saw Iga Swiatek crush Amanda Anisimova in historic fashion and the double bagel handed out might have affected players with lesser mental resolve than the American.

Instead Amanda Anisimova put together a decent summer which concluded by reaching the US Open Final, as well as earning revenge over Iga Swiatek by beating her in straight set in the Quarter Final in New York City.

2025 has already proven to be a year in which Amanda Anisimova has made good on her obvious promise and her ability to bounce back from setbacks will make her a leading contender at the Grand Slam events in 2026. She has shown more of that battling quality in coming from a set down in the last match against Madison Keys to keep herself in contention at the WTA Finals and Amanda Anisimova will be pretty comfortable with the match up considering how the US Open meeting played out.

In that match, Amanda Anisimova was the more consistent server and she was very aggressive against the Iga Swiatek second serve.

More of that is going to be needed in this last Group match, although the focus for the World Number 4 will be on making sure her own serve is operating more effectively. In the two matches played in Riyadh, Amanda Anisimova has not served nearly as well as she would have hoped, although the mometum may be with her after fighting back to beat Madison Keys in three sets.

The American looked to have a bit more rhythm in the last couple of sets against Madison Keys and Amanda Anisimova has to take a huge amount of encouragement from the way Iga Swiatek collapsed to a defeat against Elena Rybakina on Monday.

Keeping up on the scoreboard is key with Iga Swiatek perhaps not dealing with the pressure being out on her by opponents as she has in the past.

That looks to be the key for Amanda Anisimova and she is perhaps being underestimated in this Group match.

Memories of the defeat in SW19 are always going to be hard to shake, but Amanda Anisimova showed how well she can handle those distractions in her run at the US Open. Beating Iga Swiatek along the way will have done her a lot of good and there is every chance that the lower Ranked player may find a way through to the last four here in Riyadh.

MY PICKS: Elena Rybakina - 4.5 Games @ 1.80 William Hill (1 Unit)
Amanda Anisimova + 3.5 Games @ 1.91 William Hill (1 Unit)

WTA Finals: 4-4, - 0.42 Units (8 Units Staked, - 5.25% Yield)

NFL Week 9 Picks 2023 (November 2-6)

This has been a pretty busy week so this thread will only focus on the NFL Picks being made.

Hopefully it will be one where the Picks bounce back from the narrow deficit produced in Week 8.

Kansas City Chiefs vs Miami Dolphins Pick: Both of these teams have been used to playing international games in the NFL regular season, but it will be the first time either is playing in Germany.

The London games may not have been the most appealing on paper, but the German fans cannot have any complaints about seeing the Kansas City Chiefs (6-2) and Miami Dolphins (6-2) face off with their high-powered Offensive units. They are two of four teams in the AFC who have won six games this season and who will be targeting the Number 1 Seed in the Conference and holding home court advantage through the post-season until the Super Bowl.

Games against one another could be key to that outcome with those potential tie-breaking wins to separate teams in the final standings.

That is still a long way away though and the Chiefs and Dolphins meet in a big game after differing Week 8 performances. The Miami Dolphins bounced back from a loss to beat the New England Patriots at home, while the Kansas City Chiefs were finally beaten by the Denver Broncos.

There are factors at play though in that defeat, factors which should not be having the same kind of impact in this Week 9 game. Patrick Mahomes was playing in Denver through an illness, but he is much better now and will be travelling with the Kansas City Chiefs expecting to have a much stronger performance all around.

Vic Fangio is doing a good job with the Dolphins Defensive unit, but it is still a work in progress even with a returning Jalen Ramsey to provide a boost for the Secondary. With a Bye Week coming up, the Dolphins will be hoping some key players return to make Fangio's life that much more comfortable as the Defensive Co-Ordinator, while it should be said that Miami have not played as well on this side of the ball when they have faced the stronger teams on the schedule.

The Chiefs certainly are one of those better teams and Patrick Mahomes is likely to be a lot better than what we saw from him in Denver.

Some are questioning whether the Kansas City Chiefs should have added a couple of bodies to the Receiving corps to help their Quarter Back, but Mahomes is a Quarter Back that will get the best out of the Receivers he does have. Travis Kelce is clearly the top option through the air, but the Chiefs have others stepping up and developing and they will believe they can move the ball with some consistency against this Dolphins team.

It is the Offense that has really been making the headlines for the Dolphins and they will need them to be at their best if they are going to beat the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately the team have yet to get their best foot forward Offensively when facing the likes of the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles and it could be argued that the Kansas City Chiefs have the best Defensive unit of the three.

Over the last couple of weeks, Miami's Offensive Line have really been banged up and that has slowed down the rushing attack, one that had been impressing earlier in the season. Losing De'Von Achane has been a big blow considering the Home Run threat he brings with every touch, and Raheem Mostert is not fully healthy right now either.

Along with the Offensive Line issues it feels like Miami may not be able to take advantage of some of the problems that Kansas City have had in stopping the run. Being behind the chains would be very tough for Tua Tagovailoa, even if he has been playing at a high level this season, while he is not going to be given a lot of time for routes to be run down the field thanks to the strong Chiefs pass rush.

Tyreek Hill is facing his old team for the first time and is likely going to be pumped up and able to make some big plays, but consistent success for Miami may be tough to come by as they perhaps struggle against yet another of the better teams in the NFL.

Kansas City are arriving in Germany much later in the week than the Miami Dolphins, but the feeling is that the Chiefs bounce back from a poor loss last week. They are still firmly in control of the AFC West so it is not a loss that will linger and Patrick Mahomes is likely going to put in a much stronger performance all around which will lead to a win for the Chiefs.

Seattle Seahawks @ Baltimore Ravens Pick: Two teams that will have Super Bowl ambitions meet in a non-Conference game in Week 9 of the NFL season.

Both the Seattle Seahawks (5-2) and Baltimore Ravens (6-2) are leading their respective Divisions in the NFC West and AFC North and both won in Week 8 to keep some positive momentum behind them. Those wins did not come in completely convincing fashion, but it is important to build confidence at this time of the season and look to peak in January and February.

Focus could be the biggest opponent for the Ravens in Week 9 as they will follow this game with back to back Divisional games against the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. Those are hugely important games for the Ravens in looking to achieve their overall goals, while winning a non-Conference game is always fun, but perhaps not so important in the grand scheme.

The fact is that the Ravens are also playing a Seattle Defensive unit that is much improved from last season and arguably more responsible for their winning record than Geno Smith and the Offense. Adding Leonard Williams to the mix in a trade from the New York Giants looks to be a big move for the Seahawks and he is expected to play on Sunday.

Clogging up the Defensive Line, Leonard Williams is expected to be an immediate contributor for a Seattle team that have played the run well without him. Now they could be even stronger up front with an immediate test of that theory against the Baltimore Ravens, a team that have a dual-threat Quarter Back and whose DNA is to run the ball first and foremost.

Closing down Lamar Jackson and Gus Edwards completely is a next to impossible task, but the Seahawks Defensive Line have to believe they can limit the damage that is done on the ground. They did allow the Browns to put up 155 yards on the ground last week, but the Seahawks did not allow any of the Running Backs to really get loose and with the addition of Williams, it could be even tougher to churn out big gains.

Reducing the running game will certainly give the Seahawks the edge on this side of the ball with the Secondary continuing to play well. Lamar Jackson and his Receivers are finding a rhythm, but you would expect the Seattle Defensive Backs to have an edge, while Seattle also generate enough of a pass rush to rattle Jackson and force him out of the pocket.

Containing the Quarter Back when he gets loose will be important, and this Seattle Defensive unit looks like one that can at least restrict the Ravens better than the Detroit Lions did in the last game in this Stadium and that offers the visitors a chance of the upset.

Playing on the road in the early Eastern Time Zone is not ideal for a West Coast team like the Seattle Seahawks, but they have won in New York against the Giants and also on the road against Detroit. A narrow defeat in Cincinnati has also been played out, although there is enough to suggest the Seahawks can remain competitive as long as Geno Smith and the Offensive unit avoid some of the mistakes that almost cost them against the Browns last week.

Any mistakes will be difficult to overcome and this Baltimore Defensive unit have been operating at a high level.

However, in recent games, it has been possible to run the ball against the Ravens Defensive Line and Seattle are capable of establishing the run. It will be important to ease the pressure on Smith and will also mean keeping control of the clock and making sure the Seattle Defense are getting plenty of rest between chasing after Lamar Jackson.

It will be tough to win the game if relying on Geno Smith having to throw into this dangerous Baltimore Secondary- while he is backed up by good looking Receivers, the Seahawks Offensive Line could struggle to keep the Ravens pass rush from out of the backfield and that pressure could see Smith rushed into throwing when he should not be.

Interceptions have been an issue for Geno Smith and Baltimore love turning the ball over, but a clean game will give Seattle a chance to win and that has to be the sole focus for the visiting team.

With a potentially distracted Baltimore team, Seattle can keep this one competitive with a strong day in the trenches on both sides of the ball. They are getting enough points, although it does mean asking Geno Smith to not push the boat out and ultimately make mistakes that could end up costing the Seahawks.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Houston Texans Pick: After losses in Week 8, both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-4) and Houston Texans (3-4) are a game under 0.500. The difference is that the Buccaneers are playing in a weak looking NFC South Division and remain in touch with the leaders, while the Houston Texans are trailing the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC South, a team that has won six of eight games played.

This may be a non-Conference game, but both teams should be motivated to move out of a losing record position, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a little more time to prepare having been in Thursday Night Football action in Week 8. The Buccaneers have lost three in a row though and so confidence is an issue, while a Houston team that has been overachieving having dropped two of three themselves.

A rookie Quarter Back has been playing very well, but the Texans were beaten by the Carolina Panthers, and their own rookie Quarter Back, which will have been a disappointment.

CJ Stroud will try and bounce back against a tough Buccaneers Defensive unit that have kept the team competitive, even through a losing run. They have given the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a chance to win games, and there is a feeling that they can at least give the rookie leading the Houston Offense something to think about.

Running the ball is not going to feel like much of a positive option for the Texans, but CJ Stroud is going to be throwing into a young Secondary which has definitely bent, if not broken. His recent throwing outings have not been the most productive and there is going to be a concern that the rookie has hit his wall a little earlier in the season, although Stroud himself is looking to show that there is still more to come from him.

Importantly, CJ Stroud has been able to look after the ball when he has taken to the air, while the Houston Offensive Line should be able to offer him enough time to attack a Secondary allowing almost 300 passing yards per game in their three game losing run.

It has increased the pressure on Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Offensive unit and we are some way down the line from when it looked like the move from Tom Brady to Mayfield would be a comfortable one for the Buccaneers. Now there has been a real problem getting the run game going and it has meant Baker Mayfield is being forced to throw from third and long spots.

Much like his opposite number, Baker Mayfield is going to be throwing into a struggling Secondary and he does have some veteran experience at the Receiver positions who can make plays. The difference for the two Quarter Backs in this game is that CJ Stroud could be afforded a bit more time when trying to pick up longer Third Downs and Baker Mayfield may have to make plays under pressure behind this Tampa Bay Offensive Line.

That can make all the difference and Mayfield may end up making a mistake or two that proves to be costly for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Texans have not been able to create the turnovers in recent games, but this may prove to be an opportunity for them and they can bounce back from the poor loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Nothing has come easy for either team, but the Houston Texans may just have the pass rush pressure to rattle Baker Mayfield a bit more than the other way around, and that can lead to a home win for the AFC team.

Indianapolis Colts @ Carolina Panthers Pick: They would have been hoping Anthony Richardson, a top four Draft choice, would be able to lead the Indianapolis Colts (3-5) forward in what is not the most testing of Divisions. However, the concern that Richardson's style may leave him vulnerable to injury in the NFL has unfortunately come true for the Colts and he is out for the season.

Having a veteran back up like Gardner Minshew should have been a positive, but mistakes have been made and you can see why the Quarter Back has struggled to hold down a permanent starter role. Three losses in a row are one thing, but the Colts can point to those mistakes as being fatal having lost by a single point to the Cleveland Browns in between disappointing defeats to Jacksonville and New Orleans.

This week the Colts are trying to bounce back against the Carolina Panthers (1-6) who won for the first time in the Bryce Young era when seeing off fellow rookie CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans. A Bye Week has helped the Panthers clear up some of the injuries that have contributed to six straight defeats to open the season, but backing that victory up is not going to be easy.

A short week is coming up for the Carolina Panthers who are scheduled to play on Thursday Night Football in Week 10 and that is a potential distraction. They are also going to be facing a tough Indianapolis Colts Defensive unit that have been able to control the line of scrimmage and who have the ability to at least contain the threat on the ground.

It is important to do that in this one so the Colts can force Bryce Young to beat them through the air, although there are one or two holes in the Secondary which can be exposed. The key for Indianapolis will be to try and get their pass rush going against this Carolina Offensive Line and see if they can rush Young into a mistake or two, especially with their Secondary being able to make plays Intercepting passes in recent games.

Gardner Minshew is difficult to trust, but it may pay for the Quarter Back that he can likely lean on Zack Moss and Jonathan Taylor who should be able to establish the run.

Being in front of the chains is only good news for the veteran and it is also good news for the Offensive Line, which has not protected Minshew as well as they would have liked. However, they are facing a Panthers pass rush which has not been able to find the Quarter Back consistently, and being in front of the chains should mean Gardner Minshew is able to get the ball out of his hands quickly.

Backing Indianapolis to win on the road is not a great position to be in- it is worse backing them as the road favourite!

However, the Colts have won two of the three wins on the board outside of their own Stadium and the Panthers might not be as focused having finally won a game and now having to play on Thursday Night Football. This feels much more important for the Indianapolis Colts if they have any remaining ambitions to challenge the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Division and they can be backed to win.

Buffalo Bills @ Cincinnati Bengals Pick: Revenge will have been on the mind of the Buffalo Bills (5-3) as soon as they were beaten in the 2022 NFL PlayOffs and Week 10 would have long been circled. Having a few extra days to prepare can only be a good thing for the Buffalo Bills after beating Tampa Bay on Thursday Night Football and they will be ready to perform in a primetime slot.

Before last week, the Buffalo Bills might have been plenty confident in earning a win over the Cincinnati Bengals (4-3) who have made a slow start to the season and sit in the basement of the AFC North.

However, Joe Burrow and the team looked so much healthier in their strong win on the road over the San Francisco 49ers and they won't be lacking any focus after already dropping three games. Next up is the Houston Texans, so the Cincinnati Bengals won't be looking past Buffalo, while the Bengals also know putting a marker down against potential PlayOff rivals is plenty important.

The Bengals will believe they can keep the Offensive rhythm going after a strong performance in San Francisco and that is mainly down to the injuries that the Bills have suffered on this side of the ball. Rasul Douglas will help the Secondary having arrived in a trade from the Green Bay Packers, but he will take some time to learn what is expected from him and Joe Burrow and the Bengals should have success.

Joe Mixon may not make the same kind of runs that he did a few years ago, but he will pound the rock and open up the passing game for Burrow.

This will also ensure the Offensive Line is giving Joe Burrow time to find his big-play Receivers and Cincinnati will be expecting to move the ball and score plenty of points.

The Buffalo Bills will think the same with Josh Allen and the strong Offensive unit likely to enjoy plenty of success both on the ground and through the air. The Bills have not leaned on James Cook as much as some though they might this season, but he has an opportunity to have a strong game against this Cincinnati Defensive Line, while the Secondary have allowed big plays to be made against them.

Closing Josh Allen will be tough if he is completely healthy, but there is a feeling that Allen is trying to battle through to the Bye Week where he will be able to rest up.

Josh Allen is well protected by the Offensive Line and so should find time to make plays down the field, and this has the makings of a very good Sunday Night Football game.

That PlayOff loss in January will not be far from the mind, but the Cincinnati Bengals looked strong last week and they may have the edge on the Defensive side of the ball in this one. Both teams are expected to move the ball up and down the field, but a bit more balance can be found by the Bengals between the run and the pass and that may end up being the main factor in the outcome of the Week 10 clash.

Sharp money looks to be behind the home team and that looks the path to follow in a big AFC encounter.

Boxing Picks 2022- Dmitry Bivol vs Gilberto Ramirez (November 5th)

The back and forth between Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford on social media over the past week is just a frustration for fans who have missed out on seeing the one fight most Boxing supporters feel was needed to sort out the true king at 147 pounds.

I am still hopeful that both can get back to the negotiation table at the end of this calendar year and try and sign for a fight in the first quarter of 2023, although Boxing never surprises me these days when it fails to deliver the bouts we want to see the most.

Better news came out in the latter part of the week as Caleb Plant and David Benavidez are set to face off for the interim WBC Super Middleweight World Title after Canelo Alvarez suggested he will be out until September. That is a truly massive fight at 168 pounds, while we will be a step closer to an Undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion at the end of this weekend.

So there are things to look forward to in the next calendar year even if the 2022 calendar looks to be finishing with a whimper having threatened to go out with a bang.

Dmitry Bivol vs Gilberto Ramirez

Artur Beterbiev's crushing win over Joe Smith Jr has been followed by time out of the ring to clear up an injury, but the return is set to be against Anthony Yarde in late January.

The winner of that is likely to be matched with the winner of this one between Dmitry Bivol and Gilberto Ramirez as two quality operators face off. The two are both unbeaten and this is a fight that Ramirez has been calling for ever since he moved up from Super Middleweight as he looks to become a two weight World Champion.

Some big money fights were left behind at Super Middleweight and it is hard to really gauge where Gilberto Ramirez is considering his level of opponent since moving to 175 pounds.

Momentum is certainly with Dmitry Bivol having upset Canelo Alvarez earlier in the year, a win that has raised his stock to a whole new level.

However, I have been a little critical of Bivol in the past in the way he can take his foot off the gas when he feels he is in control of a fight. He didn't do that against Canelo knowing he was not going to be given any favours by the judges and it says plenty that his strong finish proved to give him the narrow win on the cards, even though most watching would have said Bivol had largely dominated.

This time Dmitry Bivol is on the 'A' side and I think the judges are going to favour him in close Rounds.

And there will be close Rounds.

Despite coming up from Super Middleweight, Gilberto Ramirez is a big Light Heavyweight and Dmitry Bivol simply is not.

While the normal view would be the fighter coming up in weight would be the smaller man in the ring, in this case I think the size advantage is with Gilberto Ramirez. He bangs pretty well and will look to rough up Dmitry Bivol, although the stronger technique is definitely something that the World Champion will use to try and control the fight.

The layers are obviously not going to take any chances opposing Bivol after what he did earlier this year, but I think this is going to be very, very close.

His technique and superior Boxing should win out, but easing off the gas will be a bad mistake against Gilberto Ramirez and this is a bout that is likely to be settled on the cards. The latter looks a big price for the upset, but I will be having a watching brief and enjoying what should be a cracking Light Heavyweight World Title fight.

The undercard is a pretty decent one in Abu Dhabi.

A returning Khalid Yafai should have too much for Jerald Paclar- the last time we saw Yafai, he was being stopped by Chocolatito in what was supposed to be his break out fight in February 2020.

It has taken some time for Khalid Yafai to get over that fight, but Roman Gonzalez has shown he has had plenty in the tank and this is a massive step down. Some time will be needed to shake off the ring rust, but Yafai can prove tough enough to break down his man and earn the Stoppage.

His younger brother Gal Yafai is also on the undercard and he can make it three stoppages from three professional fights as he looks to continue his speedy progress up the World Rankings.

Zelfa Barrett is travelling to Abu Dhabi on short notice as he takes Joe Cordina's place in this World Title fight against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov and the Mancunian will be highly confident of securing the upset.

This is a considerable step up for him though and the short preparation time may not be ideal as he puts his unbeaten record on the line against an opponent who has yet to taste defeat.

Shere Khan hits plenty hard, but Zelfa Barrett does have a win over Kiko Martinez who has gone on to beat Kid Galahad and give Josh Warrington plenty to think about since then.

I don't doubt the toughness of Barrett, but Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov has enough time to break him down in this one to become the full World Champion before defending against Joe Cordina next year.

Jessica McCaskill comes down to the Light Welterweight limit to try and become an Undisputed World Champion in a second weight class, but Chantelle Cameron is going to be a big favourite ahead of this bout.

The British fighter is comfortable at the weight and Chantelle Cameron can open the door to some very big fights if she is able to win.

At 31 years old, Chantelle Cameron is seven years younger than Jessica McCaskill and I do wonder if the American is able to shift the extra pounds and still feel strong at her age.

Since losing to Katie Taylor, Jessica McCaskill has been on a roll and I think she can give Cameron all she can handle. The unbeaten World Champion will be confident and the winner of this one has the additional motivation of perhaps being next in line to face Katie Taylor in the first half of next year.

I can make a case for the older fighter to edge this one, but I think Chantelle Cameron may be more comfortable at the weight and can box to a plan that sees her remain unbeaten and take home all the Belts.

MY PICKS: Khalid Yafai to Win by KO/TKO/DQ @ 2.10 Paddy Power (2 Units)
Gal Yafai to Win by KO/TKO/DQ @ 1.72 Paddy Power (2 Units)
Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov to Win by KO/TKO/DQ @ 2.50 Paddy Power (2 Units)

Boxing 2022: 33-64, + 5.91 Units (167 Units Staked, + 3.54% Yield)

College Football Week 10 Picks 2022 (November 5th)

The first College Football PlayOff Rankings have been released this week, but they are going to have a massive shake up following the Week 10 games.

Big games are due to be played in a number of the Power 5 Conferences that will move those Rankings about as teams focus on trying to take games as they come.

Florida Gators @ Texas A&M Aggies Pick: Week 10 of the 2022 College Football season has four of the overall top ten facing one another in what could be pivotal games as far as the College Football PlayOff shake up is concerned. All four of those teams are in the SEC and there are massive implications for the SEC Championship Game which will be determined by the results when the Tennessee Volunteers visit the Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide travel to the LSU Tigers.

Most of the attention will be on those two games and rightly so, but my first selection from Week 10 comes from College Station where the Texas A&M Aggies (3-5) host the Florida Gators (4-4). This is an important step on the road to becoming Bowl eligible and both teams are looking to show they are better than their 1-4 records in the Conference would suggest.

The Gators are in a tough spot having invested a lot of effort to try and beat the unbeaten Georgia Bulldogs in Week 9, while the Texas A&M Aggies have lost four in a row as injuries have piled up. Jimbo Fisher is unlikely to be on a hot seat with the Aggies despite this underwhelming season, but he is going to find it tough to find the three wins needed to reach six for the season if his team are not able to knock off Florida this week.

Haynes King has been a big miss for the Aggies and the Quarter Back may not be available in Week 10 either, but there were positive signs out of the Offensive unit last weekend and I think the Aggies can build on that. They should have plenty of opportunities to establish the balance on this side of the ball with an ability to run the ball backed up by Connor Weigman at Quarter Back, who is coming off his best game of his young career at this level.

In recent games, the Gators have just looked a little worn down up front and I think there are one or two holes that can be exploited by the Aggies Defensive Line. A bigger concern for the Gators is the little pass rush pressure they have managed to find and that has left the Secondary open to being attacked through the air and Florida have allowed an average of just under 300 passing yards per game over their last three contests.

The Gators Head Coach Billy Napier is making his mark on the team in his first year and a decision was made to cut ties with Brenton Cox Jr and that weakens the Gators further when it comes to stopping the run and rushing the passer.

Defensively it may be difficult to make stops, but Napier will have liked what he saw from Anthony Richardson at Quarter Back despite the loss to the Bulldogs. Anthony Richardson threw for 271 yards in the loss, but that is a big improvement on his recent numbers and the Gators may be more likely to lean on their Quarter Back's throwing ability through the remainder of the season.

One of the reasons the Gators have not tasked Richardson with throwing a lot of passes is that their Offensive Line have been strong at opening up big running lanes. They will be expected to do that against the Aggies as long as this game is close on the scoreboard and Anthony Richardson could be asked to manage the game.

However, you do have to feel it is going to be a tough ask for the Quarter Back to replicate his Week 9 performance against this Aggies Secondary. In obvious passing situations, the Aggies also have a strong pass rush that will get into the Florida Offensive Line and force Anthony Richardson to run the ball or throw quicker than he would like.

I feel that is where the difference will be made as the Gators perhaps struggle to pick themselves up after putting in such an effort against Georgia last week.

The Gators are just 4-9 against the spread in their last thirteen games following a loss by at least 20 points, while they are 2-8 against the spread in their last ten road games.

This has been a difficult season for Jimbo Fisher, but his Texas A&M team are 6-2-1 against the spread in their last nine home games and I think they will do just enough to edge past this spread.

Texas Tech Red Raiders @ TCU Horned Frogs Pick: If the early College Football PlayOff Rankings are anything to go by, it has been made clear to those in the Big 12 Conference that even a one-loss Champion may struggle to make the final four. The problem for the Conference is that nine of the ten teams playing in it have already been beaten twice this season and we still have a month of the regular season and the Championship Game to be completed.

The pressure falls on the shoulders of the TCU Horned Frogs (8-0) who are the sole unbeaten team in the Conference, and they still have tough road games at the Texas Longhorns and Baylor Bears to negotiate. In most seasons you would expect a one-loss Big 12 Champion to have a real opportunity to play in the College Football PlayOff, but the Horned Frogs can't afford to lose focus as they prepare for their latest game.

This week they are playing in Fort Worth and the Horned Frogs are hosting the Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-4) who have a 2-3 record in the Conference after being blown out by the Baylor Bears in Week 9.

While the TCU Horned Frogs have been a massive surprise in Sonny Dykes' first season as Head Coach, the Red Raiders are where most expected them to be, although back to back Bowl appearances for the first time since 2013 are far from a certainty. The Red Raiders still need at least two wins to have a chance of being selected for a Bowl, but they have an incredibly tough ending to the season where you would expect them to be the underdog in three of the four games left.

Quarter Back issues are not helping the Red Raiders who have used a Committee behind Center in recent games and that has perhaps contributed to the 15 Interceptions thrown. Last week was a miserable day out for the three players who have spent time at Quarter Back, while the Offensive Line have not been able to give them the time they have needed to make their throws, despite the strong yardage number.

I don't doubt the Red Raiders can have success in moving the chains in this game, but those Interceptions are a concern against this TCU Secondary and it could be a turnover or two that sees the home team pull clear.

While Texas Tech will be proud of some of their Offensive numbers, the Horned Frogs have been a revelation on this side of the ball with a rejuvenated Max Duggan continuing to pile up the numbers. The Quarter Back is not one that is worried about being rotated in and out of the line up like those playing for Texas Tech, and Max Duggan's confidence has seen him throw 22 Touchdown passes with just 2 Interceptions to counter.

Running the ball against the Red Raiders Defensive Line has not been that easy of late, but I do think the passing options for the Horned Frogs will loosen Texas Tech up. That should help the Horned Frogs find the balance they need to keep the chains moving and I think Max Duggan will continue to make the positive headlines for his team.

He has been well protected by his Offensive Line so should have the time to hit the Red Raiders Secondary with accurate passes and I do think Duggan and the Horned Frogs can win another game by a double digit margin to keep themselves right near the top of the College Football PlayOff Rankings.

There are some hugely positive trends in favour of the underdog that have to be respected, but the blowout last week came courtesy of some key turnovers and the feeling is those are going to be costly for Texas Tech in this one too.

The Horned Frogs blew out the Red Raiders in Lubbock last season and I think they will be able to win by double digits in front of their own fans in Week 10 of the 2022 season.

Baylor Bears @ Oklahoma Sooners Pick: Both of these teams are almost certainly out of contention for a place in the College Football PlayOff even if they win the Big 12 Championship, but winning a Championship is always a huge deal.

The Baylor Bears (5-3) will travel to the Oklahoma Sooners (5-2) in Week 10 and the former have a 3-2 record and the latter a 2-3 record in the Conference. With the TCU Horned Frogs looking like they will be able to hold at least one of the Championship Game spots in the Conference, this becomes a very important game for both the Bears and the Sooners as they look to line up opposite the Horned Frogs with the title on the line.

It has been a disappointing season for both of these schools through to the start of November- Baylor won the Big 12 Championship last season and both the Bears and the Oklahoma Sooners ended the season with at least eleven wins. They will be Bowl eligible and hoping for one of the headline games outside of the PlayOff Games, but you cannot ignore the fact that both the Bears and Sooners have failed to meet expectations.

The path to the Big 12 Championship Game definitely looks a lot more difficult for the Bears than the Sooners- Baylor have road games here and in Texas and also have to host the currently unbeaten TCU Horned Frogs, while Oklahoma still have games at lowly West Virginia and Texas Tech to negotiate.

An injury to Dillon Gabriel certainly hasn't helped the Sooners who have lost Conference games to Kansas State, TCU and Texas and have a tough path back into the Championship Game. However, they do have Gabriel back now and the Sooners have piled up the points in their last couple of wins over Kansas and Iowa State.

This is expected to be a challenging outing for the Quarter Back, but Dillon Gabriel will likely be helped by the Sooners being able to establish the run and making sure that the Offensive unit stays in front of the chains. In recent games the Bears have struggled to clamp down on the run in the manner they have for much of the season, but the Secondary continues to play well and Baylor will feel they have every chance of earning the upset if they can make one or two big plays on the ground.

Dillon Gabriel is an upgrade at Quarter Back, but it won't be easy for him to make throws against the Bears Secondary out of obvious passing situations and so it is important for the Sooners to keep running the ball. If they are behind the chains, the ball-hawking Baylor Secondary becomes even more dangerous and any extra possessions for either Offensive unit in this game is likely to be key to the final outcome.

Running the ball is also going to be an important first step for the Baylor Offense as they look to beat the Sooners for a second season in a row and they will feel there are more holes for them to exploit on the line of scrimmage than when the Oklahoma Sooners have the ball. The Bears Offensive Line have played well all season, while the Sooners have disappointed on the Defensive Line and it does feel like the road team will be playing in front of the chains consistently.

That will be music to the ears of Blake Shapen at Quarter Back who has thrown for over 1800 yards this season and added 13 Touchdowns with 5 Interceptions to those numbers. With little consistent pass rush generated by the Sooners, Blake Shapen should have time to exploit the Oklahoma Secondary in this game and especially if he is playing from third and manageable.

It will also open up the playbook for the Quarter Back and I think Shapen will have a big game for the Bears.

However, much like Dillon Gabriel, Blake Shapen has to be aware of the Oklahoma Secondary and their ability to create turnovers in a game where those feel like being the key to the outcome of the game.

Having the hook over the Field Goal total certainly feels valuable in a game that could go back and forth, especially with the Bears having the more consistent Defensive unit.

Baylor are also 17-5 against the spread in their last twenty-two games facing a team with a winning record at home, while the Sooners have not covered in their last four home games.

Oklahoma will feel like they are heating up towards the end of the season after back to back wins, but they were out-gained in terms of yardage in the win over Iowa State in Week 9 and I think this Baylor Offensive unit is much stronger than the Cyclones but with an equivalent Defense.

The extra couple of days of preparation time will help Oklahoma in Norman, but I like the Baylor Bears to keep on track as they bid to return to the Big 12 Championship Game and to defend the title they won in 2021.

Clemson Tigers @ Notre Dame Fighting Irish Pick: Rankings don't matter according to Clemson Tigers (8-0) Head Coach Dabo Swinney and his experiences of guiding this school not only into the College Football PlayOff, but also to National Championships, suggest he is someone to listen to. The reality is that the position doesn't really matter to unbeaten Clemson right now and they will surely be one of the four teams selected to compete in the PlayOff as long as they can finish this season unbeaten as the ACC Champion.

Last season was a disaster for the Tigers considering the standards that have been set and that says something for a team that finished 10-3. However, they failed to make the ACC Championship Game and the Head Coach and players have plenty of experience this time around which makes them a genuine National Championship contender.

We don't really know how good the Clemson Tigers are mainly because they have played no one of any note this season and even this trip to South Bend is not going to give them the credit they may feel they deserve. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-3) have won two in a row and five of their last six, but it has been a difficult transition year for the team under their Head Coach Marcus Freeman who took over from the departing Brian Kelly.

It means the Tigers have not played any team this season that has had fewer than two losses on the board overall and that is going to hurt them with the Committee if there are close decisions to be made. For example, the TCU Horned Frogs will have a much stronger looking resume if they finish unbeaten in the Big 12 compared with Clemson, and that may mean style points are at play for the Tigers over the remaining games.

Producing those on the road at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will be very tough though, especially as the Tigers have yet to really convince Offensively and now faces an improving Defensive unit. The Fighting Irish Defensive Line has really clamped down on the run in recent games and that is very important for them as they look to make Clemson a little one-dimensional and relying on Quarter Back DJ Uiagalelei who had his worst game of the season two weeks ago which saw his backup Cade Klubnik lead the comeback to beat the Syracuse Orange.

Overall it has not been a bad season for DJ Uiagalelei, but he has not really fulfilled the potential so many believed he had when taking over from Trevor Lawrence. Last season was a really hard one for the Quarter Back, but he has been a little more confident all around in 2022 and I do think he can have a bounce back game out of the Bye Week.

The key will be the line of scrimmage though and Clemson's Offensive Line have to find a way to at least push the Fighting Irish back. Keeping their team in third and manageable is key to limit the powerful Notre Dame pass rush and also give their Quarter Back the opportunity to make plays with either his arm or his legs.

Battling at the line of scrimmage will also be important on the other side of the ball where the Clemson Defense has been dominant for much of the season. Again, you cannot really tell how good this Defensive unit is considering the relatively comfortable schedule they have faced, but the Defensive Line has been strong up front and will be looking to shut down the Fighting Irish rushing attack.

The Fighting Irish do have a tandem at Running Back that have proven they can keep the chains moving behind the Offensive Line, but the Tigers Defensive Line has limited teams to under 100 yards per game on the ground and at 3.1 yards per carry this season. Even in recent games as they have gotten into their Conference schedule, the Tigers Defensive Line has continued to play very well up front and will be looking to force Notre Dame to turn to Drew Pyne and his arm to keep the Offense on the field.

Drew Pyne has thrown for just shy of 1200 yards this season and has 13 Touchdown passes and 4 Interceptions, but Notre Dame will need more from the Quarter Back to upset one of the leading contenders to make the PlayOffs. His numbers in recent games have not been the best and I am not sure Pyne will have the consistency to attack this Clemson Secondary and avoid a mistake or two that could prove to be very costly on the day.

Both teams will want to impose themselves on the line of scrimmage, but my edge has to be with the Clemson Tigers.

A little more consistent Quarter Back play and a stronger Offensive Line can help make a big play or two to take this game away from Notre Dame, even if winning in South Bend is a huge challenge.

However, Notre Dame are just 1-5 against the spread in their last six home games and Clemson are 20-8 against the spread in their last twenty-eight on the road. As long as DJ Uiagalelei is able to avoid the turnovers which almost sunk the Tigers two weeks ago, I do think they can win this one and cover the line on the road.

The Tigers are also well Coached out of a Bye Week and I think they will be fully prepared to win this game at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish or they risk being eliminated from the College Football PlayOff picture with a one month of the season remaining.

Weekend Football Picks and Fantasy Football GameWeek 11 2021 (November 5-7)

Another European week of Group matches is in the books, but it feels like a lot of things have happened in the Premier League between GameWeek 10 and 11.

A new manager has arrived at Tottenham Hotspur after their Halloween weekend horror show, while Newcastle United are set to lean on Eddie Howe to get them out of trouble having seemingly been turned down by multiple managers before picking the Englishman. It is not ideal for Howe who will have seen how things can sour when not the first choice at Tottenham Hotspur, but he has experience with some of the players in the Newcastle United squad and he will be tasked with getting them closer to the teams above them before the January transfer window opens and reinforcements can be brought in.

This is an important week for managers in the top two Divisions in England and throughout the top European Leagues with the final international break of the calendar year beginning on Monday. Having a two week break between games has proven to be a fruitful time for reevaluations of a managers position and there are a few on the hot seat going into November.

Fortunately mine has cooled down in the dressing room of my Fantasy Football team, but more on that below.

Southampton v Aston Villa Pick: The expectations for these clubs were markedly different going into the 2021/22 season, but the pressure is on Dean Smith to turn things around for Aston Villa.

Instead of pushing up the Premier League table and potentially challenging for European places, Aston Villa have struggled for consistency all season. Jack Grealish has moved on, but the players have not really filled the gap as effectively as Dean Smith would have liked, while injuries and out of form have hurt the key players remaining.

Aston Villa are likely to be without Danny Ings this week, while the likes of Bertrand Traore, Leon Bailey and Emiliano Buendia have not really been performing as the fans would have expected. Ezri Konsa is suspended and I think Aston Villa are looking vulnerable heading to the south coast and especially when you note their level of performance in defeats over the last month.

Now they have to face a Southampton team who are operating far more effectively than many believed they would be. Many tipped them up for relegation, but Southampton are beginning to turn their performances into the kind of results they deserve and they look more than capable of beating Aston Villa at home.

There is a consistency at either end of the field that Aston Villa have been lacking and Southampton look happy in the system that Ralph Hasenhuttl has them playing in. Players are in form and the wins over Leeds United and Watford could have come by much wider margins with a little more composure in front of goal.

Southampton were recently held to a 2-2 home draw by Burnley, but they deserved more out of that game and a similar level of performance will be expected to be too good for Aston Villa.

A home win will put Dean Smith in an uncomfortable position during the November international break, but on current form it is hard to see any other outcome. Southampton would like to add more goals to their football to really begin pulling away from the bottom three, but they should be able to create the chances they need to win this fixture and I think they can be backed to do that on the Asian Handicap.

Manchester United v Manchester City Pick: The Manchester derby is still a very big fixture on the calendar, although these days Manchester United are less likely to use any success in this fixture to take them on to bigger and better things.

Instead it is Manchester City who have been loading up the trophy cabinet, but Manchester United have been the team who have been getting the better of the head to head. They are unbeaten in 4 Premier League games against the noisy neighbours and Manchester United have won 3 of those fixtures, although the majority of recent successes have been in games at the Etihad Stadium.

That is backed up by the fact that Manchester United have won 1 of their last 6 at Old Trafford against Manchester City and there will be some nervousness amongst the fans on Saturday. The last time they saw their team play here it ended in an embarrassing defeat to a major rival, and some fans will be worrying that a similar kind of result could be the outcome of this one.

A late Cristiano Ronaldo goal salvaged a point for Manchester United in the Champions League during the week, but it was another sub-par performance under the current manager. After barely escaping with his job following the defeat to Liverpool, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can ill-afford another really bad loss ahead of the November international break.

He has found a way to earn big results against Pep Guardiola and that has to offer Manchester United some encouragement. However, they cannot keep playing at their current level with the magic moments helping Manchester United out of a hole, while they look pretty poor defensively and are going to be without Raphael Varane and, potentially, Victor Lindelof this week.

Manchester City have produced some big wins away from home in the Premier League and they have been much more solid all around than their rivals. In recent games they have been punished for mistakes being made, but in the main Manchester City continue to be tough to break down and they will control much of the play.

Unlike Liverpool, Manchester City have been a little more inconsistent in converting their chances in the final third as they continue to struggle without a real number nine. The win over Brighton showed Manchester City can still score goals without a recognised striker, but the narrow wins over Leicester City and Chelsea have been founded on strong defensive performances.

It does feel like a game in which the first goal is going to be huge and I do think it will be a close match, mainly because of the way these teams have matched up with each other. The last 5 Manchester derby games have seen one of the teams fail to score and that could be the outcome again.

My feeling is that Manchester City will show the superior defensive system which ends up helping them find a way to earn the victory. I hate to say that, but it is also not much of a surprise to see the visitors at a much shorter price than Liverpool considering the underlying numbers produced.

However, Manchester United have matched up well with Manchester City and any team with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line have to be respected. The injuries at the back and the absence of Paul Pogba does not help the home team much though and I do think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to want to set his team up to be dangerous on the counter attack.

Manchester City should be aware of that and they have looked good enough at the back to make me believe that the team that scores first may be able to do enough to contain the other in the first derby of the season. It would be a major upset if Manchester United were to win on current form, but Tottenham Hotspur managed to do that behind a strong defensive foundation and this could be the sixth derby in a row where one of these teams fails to score.

Brentford v Norwich City Pick: If Norwich City are serious about finding a way to survive in the Premier League the feeling is that they are going to have to make a managerial change. It is a risky decision as Daniel Farke has proven he can manage through the choppy waters of the Championship, but the manager has also shown he has not been able to find the tactics, system or the motivational tools to produce wins at the Premier League level.

The 1-2 defeat to Leeds United means Norwich City have lost 18 of their last 20 Premier League games and you won't find too many people who will believe they can bridge the 8 point gap between themselves and 17th place in the table. Even with 28 fixtures left, Norwich City look doomed to continue their yo-you existence between the top two Divisions.

The fixtures either side of the November international break give Norwich City a chance to pick up some big results, but it is very hard to trust them. They are simply not scoring enough goals and Norwich City are being punished at the back and now have to face a Brentford team that will be keen to bounce back from a poor run.

Brentford have lost 3 Premier League games in a row, but they were unfortunate against Chelsea and Leicester City. That was not the case last weekend when beaten at Burnley, but Brentford will feel they can get back on track against an opponent who are lacking confidence.

In their home games, Brentford have been unfortunate not to have picked up more points. They arguably deserved to beat both Liverpool and Chelsea, while Brentford did enough to pick up a point against Leicester City. The level of performance will certainly give Norwich City plenty of problems to deal with and Brentford created enough chances in the 1-1 home draw with this opponent last season to have deserved to win.

That was behind closed doors, but a full Brentford Community Stadium should push Brentford forward and I think they are going to have enough to see off the struggling Canaries. It will be important to make a positive start, while Brentford have been pretty good defensively in the majority of their home games to believe they can mainly contain what Norwich City are likely to bring.

Scoring enough goals is still a question for Brentford to answer, but I think they will find spaces and chances against Norwich City. The home team should be able to pick up the three points in a game that features at least two goals on the day.

Chelsea v Burnley Pick: The machine keeps rumbling forward at Chelsea under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel and they are expected to produce another three points on a weekend when their main title rivals have difficult looking away games.

The manager made it clear last weekend that he does not celebrate his rivals dropping points, but instead is focused on making sure Chelsea look after themselves. It has worked for a team that have won 6 of their last 7 games in all competitions in normal time and look on the brink of progressing to another Champions League Last 16.

Chelsea have won 6 of their last 8 Premier League games at Stamford Bridge with the exceptions being defeats to Arsenal and Manchester City. That is something that will bother Tuchel and he will be reminding his players of the importance of making sure they remain focused with his lowest point as manager of the club being a 2-5 home defeat to West Brom.

In the main Chelsea have been very good at both ends of the field and they should have too much for a Burnley team who have conceded at least twice in all 5 away Premier League games played this season.

Burnley are coming in off an important home win over Brentford, perhaps their best performance of the season by some distance, while they have recently drawn 2-2 at Leicester City and Southampton. However, Burnley were beaten 2-0 at both Liverpool and Manchester City this season and their last 2 visits to Stamford Bridge have resulted in comfortable defeats too.

The home team may be without their top two striking options, but that hasn't stopped Chelsea piling up 10 goals in their last 2 Premier League games. They should be able to create chances against this Burnley team who have been giving up some big opportunities and it would be a surprise if Chelsea cannot match the margin of wins that their two main title rivals secured in home wins against this opponent.

You have to say that Burnley have nothing to lose and they can cause problems for teams, but Chelsea look really strong at the moment and I think they will likely win this one by a couple of goals on the day.

Crystal Palace v Wolves Pick: The fan bases of Crystal Palace and Wolves might have been a little frustrated by what they would have considered to be 'negative' football under the previous management regimes.

Both Roy Hodgson and Nuno Espirito Santo did what they had to for Crystal Palace and Wolves respectively and I do think the work would have been appreciated by all associated with those clubs. However, a decision was made to bring in someone with a more expansive system and both Patrick Vieira and Bruno Lage have been well received.

I do think Crystal Palace and Wolves perhaps deserve even more points than they have put on the board, but the positive approach has players and fans smiling. It has led to a number of very good results and both clubs are coming in off victories last weekend which should mean we have two confident teams ready to face one another.

There won't be much between these two teams, but I do think Crystal Palace have been producing the superior underlying numbers in recent games. They may have drawn 3 in a row at home, but Crystal Palace could have easily won all three games with the chances created and given away and I think they may edge to the points against a team they have beaten in 3 of the last 5 at Selhurst Park.

You can't underestimate how well Wolves have played this season, but in recent games they have perhaps struggled with the balance between attack and defence. Better finishing from Leeds United and Everton may have led to a single point rather than the four picked up from those Premier League games, while Wolves have had a slightly better bounce of the ball than some of their recent opponents.

Crystal Palace are hard to trust as they are still looking to put the finishing touches to what has been some very good, eye-pleasing football. They have struggled to put teams away, but I do think they can be backed on the Asian Handicap to edge to the three points with a draw meaning the stake is returned.

There may not be much between them- Wolves have been the more clinical of the two in recent games, but I do think Crystal Palace have played very well at home and could easily have secured as many as three wins here instead of the single one.

Before the season some may have tipped this match to be the last one on the highlights show at the end of the night, but both Crystal Palace and Wolves are playing really well and it could be an enjoyably match for the neutrals too. Goals could be on the cards with the narrow lean going with Crystal Palace to secure another vital three points.

Brighton v Newcastle United Pick: Last season the luck seemingly was going against Brighton who were playing fine football, but not being rewarded with enough goals. That has looked like it could potentially be an issue for them again this season, but Brighton have found a few more goals which has led to more points being placed on the board.

The injury to Danny Welbeck is a blow, but Brighton are creating chances and they showed their character in coming from 2-0 down to earn a point at Anfield last Saturday. Building on that before the November international break is the key for Graham Potter as Brighton look to come out of a sequence of games in which they have struggled to turn draws into wins.

They are still hard to beat and Brighton are still creating enough chances to be confident in getting the better of struggling Newcastle United. Brighton did that twice in very impressive fashion last season and they may be facing this opponent at the right time.

Newcastle United are getting healthier, but they are struggling at both ends of the field and it feels like no one really wants to take over as manager despite the potential in the North East. That underlines the difficult position they find themselves with plenty of time before the January transfer window opens and they can bring in reinforcements.

The side have drawn at Watford and Crystal Palace in recent away games and that has to be respected. However, Newcastle United were so fortunate to get away with a point from Selhurst Park and they are still giving up some huge chances in their fixtures as the squad are lacking belief in themselves.

If they do that here, Brighton should be able to take advantage and secure another good win over this opponent. Both fixtures ended 3-0 in favour of Brighton last season and I think The Seagulls are performing at a high enough level to think they can win a game that features at least two goals on the day.

Arsenal v Watford Pick: The last international break until March is going to get underway following the latest round of Premier League fixtures and this is a big chance for Arsenal to enter the two week break with plenty of optimism.

A slow start to the season has been replaced with a strong run of form and Arsenal are now back in amongst the top six and with a chance to close the gap on the teams above them. The Manchester derby and West Ham United host Liverpool means the four teams immediately above Arsenal are facing one another and this is a real chance for Mikel Arteta's men to get a little closer to the top four.

The manager will be urging his team to focus on what they can do for themselves and Arsenal have found a pretty decent balance in home games which makes them dangerous. The goalkeeper has been vital to their recent positive results away from home, but Arsenal have been much more confident at the Emirates Stadium and they are scoring plenty of goals here.

I expect them to do the same against a Watford team who are still working out the patterns that Claudio Ranieri is trying to implement on them. The manager is known for his organisation, but Watford have looked really vulnerable when teams have attacked them and they were fortunate that Southampton's poor finishing kept them in the game last weekend.

Even then, the 0-1 home loss to Southampton is a huge blow for Watford who would have expected to back up the 2-5 win at Everton the week before. They have a very difficult run of fixtures beginning with this game at Arsenal followed by games against Manchester United, Leicester City, Chelsea and Manchester City.

There doesn't feel like a lot of points to be earned in that run so there is some pressure on Watford.

It is hard to see them earning anything here with Arsenal likely to dominate the chances and I do think they can secure another win at home. They have beaten Watford 3 times in a row at home and Arsenal have been creating a lot more chances here than they have on their travels, which is a real concern for Watford and their vulnerable defence.

The counter attack is the best approach Watford will take, but I think they will struggle to contain a home team playing with the swagger that Arsenal have been. If they get in front, I think Arsenal will be able to produce too much in the final third for Watford to deal with and they can win by a couple of goals as they secure another three points.

Everton v Tottenham Hotspur Pick: There is going to be a lot of excitement around Tottenham Hotspur after the appointment of Antonio Conte and the upcoming fixture list gives them a very good opportunity to come together and produce some big results.

This is far from an easy game, but Tottenham Hotspur may benefit from taking on Everton at the right time.

Rafael Benitez has seen his team lose 3 games in a row and Everton have been hurt by injuries to some key players. The international break may give the team a chance to get some of those players back and Everton back on track, but this could be another tough outing in front of the home fans who have been a little tense.

Everton have been disorganised at the back and that has seen West Ham United, Watford and Wolves create a huge amount of chances against them in winning Premier League games.

It is not easy to believe in Tottenham Hotspur considering their inconsistent performances all season, but the squad never seemingly got behind their former manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Antonio Conte is not likely to be happy watching his players produce sub-par performances and I do think his system will suit the squad and make Tottenham Hotspur a more cohesive attacking unit.

Sorting out defensive issues will be a challenge, but the game against Vitesse showed the kind of confidence Antonio Conte may give the squad with his enthusiasm. They attacked well that day and Spurs have a decent record at Everton, which makes me think they are going to find a way to win here.

The home team are not looking sure at the back and that is where the attacking talents of Tottenham Hotspur should be able to shine through. Backing the visitors on the Asian Handicap looks the play as Antonio Conte returns to the Premier League with some style.

Leeds United v Leicester Pick: For the second time this week, Leicester City have created a host of chances at home but they have failed to win the fixture played.

There has to be some real frustration in the squad that they continue to produce inconsistent results and Leicester City will be looking to bounce back this weekend to give themselves a boost to take into the next two weeks. They have played well at times, but Leicester City will have to take their chances when they arrive and they have to show a little more composure in the final third if they are going to start putting a strong set of results together.

This is far from an easy game for Leicester City after Leeds United beat Norwich City last Sunday and they have had a week to prepare for this fixture. Injuries are finally clearing up for Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United may have an upturn in form going forward, but they have been a little up and down themselves.

Leeds United have been strong at times, but they have also been a team that have given up good chances and they would have lost 3 of 4 home Premier League games if not for a late Penalty in the last game here against Wolves. The pressure of playing at Elland Road has perhaps affected the levels of the squad and I do think Leeds United have shown enough vulnerabilities here to suggest Leicester City can earn the edge.

Leicester City have scored at least two goals in 4 of their last 5 away games in all competitions and they may have enough in the final third to edge to the points in this one too. I do think Leeds United can cause problems, but they have missed Patrick Bamford and I think Leicester City can end their poor run of results with a win here.

West Ham United v Liverpool Pick: One of the big questions about West Ham United this season was how were they going to cope with Europa League Football and Premier League commitments. The results have largely been pretty good overall, but West Ham United earned an important win over Tottenham Hotspur after playing in Europe last time out.

Before that, West Ham United had lost to both Manchester United and Brentford after Europa League games and in both they had conceded very late on as fatigue potentially played a part. A strong team played in Belgium on Thursday in a 2-2 draw and West Ham United will have to dig deep if they are going to earn a result here.

There are still some areas in which West Ham United can improve and they have given up some decent chances to opponents in recent games. However, The Hammers keep producing in the final third and that is going to make them a threat against any team they face.

This week it is Liverpool who will head to the London Stadium and they are looking to bounce back from two points dropped against Brighton last Saturday. A win over Atletico Madrid has moved Liverpool through to the Last 16 of the Champions League as Group Winners to restore confidence, while Liverpool have been really dangerous away from home having scored at least twice in each fixture on their travels this season.

Liverpool have a very strong record at West Ham United too, which adds to their short price, but Jurgen Klopp's men have not looked that secure defensively. Back to back 0-5 wins away from home at Watford and Manchester United will inspire plenty of confidence, but Brentford held Liverpool to a 3-3 draw and this West Ham United team are very good.

Their poor record out of a Europa League tie is a concern, but West Ham United have not been easy to see off and I expect them to push Liverpool more than they have in recent seasons. The midfield injuries are hurting the visitors and West Ham United look like they are being disrespected by the prices here.

Fantasy Football GameWeek 11
It has not been a good month and the major mistake made was allowing myself to let the heart speak over the head and refuse to Captain Mohamed Salah at Old Trafford.

That one decision has seen me drop massively in the OR in the Fantasy Premier League game, but GW10 was better even if I did end up leaving 18 points on the bench.

The green arrows were back and I quite like the look of my team going into GW11, although I do have two FTs and am certainly not going to waste them. The attitude is to roll one over so I have two coming out of the international break, but it is a case of 'use it or lose it' in regard to the other.

The focus, as it will be for many, is looking at the incoming Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur and wondering how quickly he can get this team turned around. They are struggling, make no mistake about that, and the 3-2 win over Vitesse shows there is still a vulnerability to them at the back which will take time to work on.

However, Tottenham Hotspur have a really good month of fixtures coming up and I do expect most to have at least two players from their squad and others going in hard and bringing in a third player.

My main focus has to be on the two wing backs, Sergio Reguilon and Emerson Royal, as well as the two big hitters. Heung-Min Son has actually played pretty well this season and been effective, but the hope for Spurs fans and Fantasy players is that Harry Kane may be rejuvenated with a demanding, intense and strong manager like Antonio Conte who seems a good fit here.

Out of the two wing backs, I think Reguilon has less competition and he may be worth the extra outlay to bring him in. Heung-Min Son has been very popular, unsurprisingly, but I am happy to wait to bring him in and give Kai Havertz one more chance. I do think Tottenham Hotspur can win at Everton and Son will play a big part, but others could look to pick Lucas Moura who scored on Thursday and is certainly going to be given the early opportunities on the right side of the attack.

The Brazilian is significantly cheaper than Son and his price could take some big leaps if Lucas Moura gets off to a strong start under this manager, but I think I want to take a watching brief on the attack this week.

Moving in Sergio Reguilon looks much easier with Luke Shaw struggling (and on four bookings meaning one from a suspension). The price has dropped on Shaw over the last couple of weeks, which means losing some value, but I would not be surprised if he is booked this weekend which would mean his missing out on the trip to Watford and the next fixtures at Manchester United being Manchester City, Watford, Chelsea and Arsenal.

None of those are that appealing, so the sideways move at the back looks a good one and especially with the Spurs fixtures easing from now until GameWeek 16. It will also give me time to determine whether I want either Son or Kane, while also allowing the international break to cause the usual amount of havoc it does.

This is going to be slightly late as Chelsea look to be entering a much tougher part of their schedule after the international break than the one they have been working their way through over the last month.

Most have now begun to double up on the Chelsea defenders, especially with Romelu Lukaku out of the equation and the two wing backs have been getting plenty of support.

Both Reece James and Ben Chilwell were rested in the Champions League and I do expect both to start against Burnley, which could be damaging to any of us non-owners out there.

I picked Antonio Rudiger to join Andreas Christensen, who had been my 'cheap' way into the Chelsea backline, but I have noticed something which may just be an early coincidence.

Thomas Tuchel has options at the back and he has begun to give minutes to Trevoh Chalobah too- in his favoured back three, the options are Rudger, Chalobah, Christensen and also Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva.

Out of those players, I do feel that Antonio Rudiger (£5.9) is the most secure, followed by Silva (£5.5). At one time it would have been Azpilicueta (£6.0) leading the way, but he has not started either of the last two Premier League games and I do wonder if he is dealing with a knock or is he being fazed out.

Both wing backs Ben Chilwell (£6.0) and Reece James (£5.8) look to be cementing those positions in the team and look like rewarding owners when they start, although Tuchel can be streaky with his selections in those positions. However, I think both have played so well that it will be hard to drop them now.

The interesting part for me, and perhaps the worrying part, is how Tuchel has been dealing with his third centre back spot in recent weeks.

Like I say it may just be an early coincidence, but Andreas Christensen (£5.0) has only started one of the last four home Premier League games and that came against Manchester City. It is Trevoh Chalobah (£4.9) who has started the other three Premier League home games against Aston Villa, Southampton and Norwich City.

However, Andreas Christensen has gotten the nod in every away game played by Chelsea this season compared with Trevoh Chalobah who has started in just one and I do think this is something to keep in mind this weekend. After starting in Malmo, it would perhaps not be a major surprise if Andreas Christensen does not play this weekend and it hurts my double up of the Chelsea defence, although the bench should cover any absence.

Maybe Thomas Tuchel feels the 'easier' home games is a good chance to blood Chalobah while giving him two solid partners in Rudger and Thiago Silva, but Andreas Christensen may be considered for all of the 'bigger' games they are facing.

It certainly gives me some pause for thought when it comes to transfers going forward, but the Chelsea fixture list does get more difficult after the international break so any defensive moves with the players I have may have to wait.

I do like the squad I have, but I also think there are one or two players that may need to be moved around to really get it into a position I want to be in. The FOMO life means avoiding the Mohamed Salah Captaincy is a difficult choice, although this weekend may be the best time to do that if you favour fixtures over form.

It makes it much more difficult to look elsewhere when considering that Mohamed Salah has nine goals in eight games against West Ham United and has scored at least once in all but one of those fixtures. The West Ham United defence has looked vulnerable at times this season and tire off the back of their European exploits, while Liverpool continue to score goals at a huge rate away from home.

Couple those factors together and I think you have to stick your armband on the Egyptian who has been clear of all rivals in the Fantasy Premier League game too.

I am sticking with Kai Havertz for at least one more week, while the sub bench should be able to take care of any absentees with doubts about Bryan Mbeumo (injury knock) and Andreas Christensen (rotation risk as highlighted above).

The big decision may end up being whether I start with Michail Antonio or Cristiano Ronaldo, although the lean is with the West Ham United striker when looking at the underlying numbers of the Liverpool and Manchester City defences respectively.

My team should be posted on Twitter at around 7pm on Friday evening, but remember, the deadline is 6:30pm this week.
