The second half of the draws at the Australian Open will get underway on Tuesday and you can still read my outright picks from the tournament here.
Day One was a very eventful day in the women's draw as the Seeds kept tumbling out of the tournament through the day with the biggest name being the Number 5 Seed Ana Ivanovic. The Serb was definitely someone that could have potentially won the opening Grand Slam event of the season, but she blew a one set lead and never looked like getting herself going to the level required in the final set.
Belinda Bencic, Sabine Lisicki, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Carla Suarez Navarro, Angelique Kerber and Lucie Safarova were all other Seeds that went out on the first day at Melbourne Park and has opened up the bottom half of the draw. At one stage, it looked like Simona Halep was struggling too, but she did manage to move into the Second Round as well as other favourites for the title in Maria Sharapova and Eugenie Bouchard.
There was nothing like that kind of drama on the men's side of the draw when it came to Seeds being knocked out, but ten matches on the first day went to the full five set distance which is something of a surprise especially in the early part of a Grand Slam event.
I was very happy with the start to the tournament for the picks which went 4-1 on Monday and the fact that Rafael Nadal looked as impressive as he did in dismissing Mikhail Youzhny was just a bonus to boot. Nadal will have bigger tests as the week goes on, but it was interesting to hear Mats Wilander saying in commentary that a lot of players believe the Spaniard could be a real danger if he does make it to the second week.
That echoes what I thought about Nadal's chances of winning this tournament despite his own reservations as a strong week should give him plenty of confidence to take into the business end of the event.
A nasty headache enveloped me this evening which means I will only put my picks down without the usual reasons for it, but I will return to normal by tomorrow once the medication kicks in this evening. Suffice to say I will not be watching any of the tennis live on Day Two, but will look for a catch up while preparing for Day Three Picks.

This is my little corner on the net where I can offer my thoughts on a number of sports, while I also make picks from upcoming games. Regular picks are made from the football (soccer), tennis, NFL/College Football and NBA Basketball. I also devote a spot entirely to Manchester United, my first love in life, called 'United Corner' where I express my views on all things concerning this wonderful club. I hope you enjoy your time here.
