NFL Week 10 Picks 2020 (November 12-16)

The NFL season is moving on at a rapid rate and we are now just weeks away from the PlayOffs.

Nothing is being left to chance though and that means a backup plan has been produced and approved in case the Covid-19 crisis has an adverse affect on the remainder of the regular season with Bye Weeks running out and the potential for lost games looming. So far the NFL has actually done a really good job for the most part, but the College Football issues have underlined how quickly a good job can turn bad and I do think the contingency plans had to be made up just in case.

So with more than half of the regular season in the books, I think most will have changed their pre-season expectations and their Power Rankings would have moved considerably. Unsurprisingly I have to feel the same, although my pre-season AFC predictions look decent enough when it comes to the potential PlayOff shake up.

I had Buffalo, Baltimore, Tennessee and Kansas City all down as Divisional winners with the Wild Card teams being New England, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Six of those seven teams look more than capable of making the post-season, although the Steelers are in control of the AFC North over the Ravens, while the Tennessee Titans will be in a big battle with the Indianapolis Colts over the next seven weeks.

The NFC predictions have not looked nearly as good- both the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers have been devastated by injuries and don't look like they are even going to make the post-season let alone win their respective Divisions.

I had Tampa Bay finishing above the New Orleans Saints, but both to make the PlayOffs, although their positions into January look like they are going to be reversed.

At least the Green Bay Packers look like they are going to win the NFC North and the Philadelphia Eagles should make the PlayOffs, albeit as Divisional Winners rather than a Wild Card team.

My Super Bowl prediction was the Kansas City Chiefs repeating with a win over the New Orleans Saints and I do think those two teams are still more than capable of making the big game. Topping their respective Conferences will make things easier, but I don't think either is going to do that which means a big road win or two are likely going to be needed.

Going into Week 10, my top five teams would be as follows:

1) Pittsburgh Steelers (8-0): they are the last unbeaten team and so have to be respected as such, but the Offense will only go as far as Ben Roethlisberger will take them and his injuries in Week 9 will be a concern for a team with no Bye Weeks to come.

2) Kansas City Chiefs (8-1): the defending Champions are quietly going about their work and will still believe the Number 1 Seed in the AFC is within their grasp.

3) Buffalo Bills (7-2): Josh Allen returned to form in a big way in Week 9 and the Bills still look to have an improvement in them on the Defensive side of the ball.

4) Green Bay Packers (6-2): I worry about the Defensive Line and their inability to clamp down on the run and that is going to be an important factor in January. However, Aaron Rodgers and the Offense have been rolling well enough to suggest another Super Bowl run is in this team.

5) New Orleans Saints (6-2): sweeping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gives New Orleans control of the NFC South and this is a team getting healthier. Drew Brees is perhaps not the Quarter Back he was, but he still has enough to lead the Saints to the PlayOffs and potentially a second Super Bowl.

Week 10 Picks
It was a very strong start to the season, but Week 9 was the one I was looking to avoid.

Things might have looked a lot different if the Houston Texans had not played prevent Defense down the stretch to allow the backdoor cover, while the Los Angeles Chargers dropped two winning Touchdowns and those two events have swung the selections from a disappointing 4-4 to a 2-6 record for the week.

At least the Tennessee Titans and Green Bay Packers kept things ticking along, although on Thursday Night Football I will be opposing the former who host the Indianapolis Colts in Nashville.

Further selections will be added to this thread in the days ahead.

Indianapolis Colts @ Tennessee Titans Pick: There has been an acceptance of a proposal from the NFL in case the season is affected by the ongoing Coronavirus crisis and that has changed the nature of every game being played by teams. In previous years you would look at a spot for a team who may overlook an upcoming opponent if bigger, Divisional Games were on the horizon, but that may not be the case with Head Coaches knowing that every game could be pivotal if cancellations occur in the weeks between now and the PlayOffs.

Other teams will perhaps be worrying about how they can motivate their players through difficult moments, but that should not be the case for either Frank Reich or Mike Vrabel on Thursday Night Football.

They will be leading the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans into this hugely important Week 10 game, the first of two between these AFC South rivals in three weeks. The Titans lead the Division at 6-2, but the Indianapolis Colts are right behind them at 5-3 and so two Divisional Games could be vital to the outcome of the final standings.

There are no guarantees that the team finishing 2nd in the Division would earn a spot in the PlayOffs and that only increases the pressure on the Colts and the Titans who have big games in Week 11 before facing one another again.

Tennessee are coming in off an important win in Week 9 even if the team were not at their best against the Chicago Bears. It was the much maligned Defensive unit which stepped up on the day and there is a big challenge in front of Ryan Tannehill and the Offense to bounce back and have a much stronger all around showing in this game.

It won't be easy even with Derrick Henry running the ball as well as he has for much of the season- last week Henry struggled to really get into the Chicago Defensive Line and had fewer than 70 yards on the ground and this week he takes on the Indianapolis Defensive Line which has clamped down on the run all season even after the defeat to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday.

Lamar Jackson had a decent game on the ground, but Indianapolis largely held down the Running Backs and in this game they won't face the same threat out of Ryan Tannehill scrambling with his legs. That should mean they can at least limit the damage Henry is able to do on the ground and force the struggling Quarter Back to make the plays through the air to move the chains up and down the field.

Ryan Tannehill has shown he is an effective starter in the NFL since arriving at Tennessee from the Miami Dolphins, but he had a rough showing against the Bears and is averaging less than 200 passing yards per game in his last three starts. There are one or two holes in the Indianapolis Secondary which could be exploited by Tannehill, but he will have to deal with the Colts pass rush pressure if Derrick Henry is struggling to rip off the big gains and that will give Indianapolis every chance to find the upset and take control of the Division.

Much will depend on how Philip Rivers bounces back from a rough outing against the Baltimore Ravens- the veteran Quarter Back is not the same player he was even a couple of years ago, but this might be a decent match up for him and Rivers has shown enough to suggest there is still enough in the tank to win this Division.

It could all come down to Rivers because the Colts have not run the ball as well as they would have liked without Marlon Mack. They have struggled to run the ball efficiently all season, but it is unlikely they are going to be able to get things going against a Titans Defensive Line which has just put the clamps on teams running the ball against them in recent outings.

That has seen teams take to the air against the Tennessee Secondary and it has been an effective play. Desmond King has been brought in from the Los Angeles Chargers and made a big impact in his first game in Week 10, but TY Hilton is also back for Indianapolis to serve as a decoy if nothing else.

It should mean things open up for Rivers who should be given ample time from his Offensive Line against the weak pass rush generated by the Titans. With that extra time I do think the veteran is still capable of finding the holes in the Secondary to move the ball for Indianapolis and I do think they can win this game.

The battle with Baltimore was a difficult one for the Indianapolis Colts, but Tennessee didn't have an easy game either and so both teams should feel banged up.

Indianapolis are 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games in Tennessee and they have won on their last two visits here. The road is also 4-1 against the spread in the last five of this Divisional rivalry.

The Colts are 5-0-1 against the spread in their last six when coming off a blow out loss at home and Tennessee are 2-5 against the spread in their last seven as the favourite. It isn't a huge amount of points for the road underdog to be given, but I do think Indianapolis match up well with Tennessee and can win a close one to move on top of the AFC South.

Since writing this up the spread has moved very much in favour of the Colts, and I am sticking with them too.

Washington Football Team @ Detroit Lions Pick: If you reach the halfway mark of the 2020 season and you have a 2-6 record the chances are that you are not in contention to make the PlayOffs. However in the case of the 2-6 Washington Football Team there is still a chance to contend for the NFC East Division as they are only 1.5 games behind the Philadelphia Eagles leading the way, although the defeat to the New York Giants in Week 9 would have really stung.

They will be looking to bounce back in Week 10 when visiting the 3-5 Detroit Lions who have lost consecutive games to slip to three games behind the Green Bay Packers. Even a Wild Card spot looks beyond the Lions already and that means Matt Patricia has to be feeling his seat warming up as Head Coach of Detroit.

Matthew Stafford has at least been cleared to face the visitors, but Kenny Golladay misses out again and that has led to some inconsistencies from the Detroit Lions. They are also going to have a tough time matching up with the Washington Defensive unit which has been better protecting against the pass than they have in stopping the run.

Unfortunately for Detroit they have been happier throwing the ball than running the ball and I do think that may be an issue for them. Matthew Stafford still has some talented Receivers to throw to, but Washington's Secondary have played well in recent games and they are massively aided by a very strong pass rush which should be able to rattle Stafford and at times get to him and bring him down.

In recent games the Offensive Line have just had a couple more issues keeping Stafford upright and I do think the Football Team will be able to get to him if they are clamping down on the run and putting the Lions in obvious passing downs and distance. That may lead to one or two mistakes from the Quarter Back without his top Receiving option and at least gives Washington a chance of causing the road upset.

They have decided they are going to go with Alex Smith as the starting Quarter Back in Week 11 having not been impressed with Dwayne Haskins or Kyle Allen in that position. At the moment Washington still believe they can win the Division so going with a veteran makes sense, even if Smith is yet to show he is going to recover to the levels he was displaying before the horrific injury suffered two years ago which almost saw him lose his leg let alone play in the NFL again.

Alex Smith had three Interceptions last week which proved to be costly for the Washington Football Team in their loss to Divisional rivals New York Giants, but he did suggest he felt more comfortable and confident in his leg holding up. This week Smith will be facing a Detroit Secondary which has not been able to hold up in pass protection as they are getting very little up front and the Lions have also not made the plays to turn the ball over which should help the Quarter Back.

To make things a little easier for Alex Smith he can hand the ball off to the Running Backs on the roster and they should be able to rip off some big gains to keep the Offense in front of the chains in this game. That is important to make sure Smith is not feeling the pressure is all on him and the Detroit Defensive Line have struggled to stop the run in recent games.

I do like the visiting underdog with the points in this one, although the spread has slipped down to a Field Goal mark- having the hook would have been a huge advantage, but the number is appealing enough here with Washington looking more capable of moving the ball Offensively with some consistency.

The Lions are now 1-4 against the spread in their last five games as the home favourite and they are 5-14 against the spread in their last nineteen overall. While they may have the better record, I think the Washington Football Team might be able to take advantage of the Lions Defensive issues and cover the mark here.

Houston Texans @ Cleveland Browns Pick: Heavy winds are expected in Cleveland for this game which is hosted by the 5-3 Browns who are coming in off a Bye Week. It has been an important time for Cleveland who may have lost Odell Beckham Jr for the season, but who have had a number of other key performers return and look like they could be set to go on Sunday.

They are hosting the 2-6 Houston Texans who won for the second time in 2020 when beating the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. It says plenty about the 2020 Texans that both of their wins have come against the terrible Jaguars and they are going to need to dig down deep to earn a victory on the road against a team who will be chasing a PlayOff spot in the weeks ahead.

You never know what could happen with Deshaun Watson at Quarter Back, but this does not look an ideal situation for him. The weather conditions are likely going to mean the game-plan is to try and keep the ball out of the air for as long as possible and Watson may not have David Johnson beside him in the backfield.

David Johnson suffered a concussion last week and is doubtful to say the least, but the Houston Offensive Line has not exactly been helping their team pound the rock with any sort of consistency all season. Now they have to go against a Cleveland Defensive Line which has thrived in stopping the run and who will be even tougher to run on in the conditions.

That sets things up for the Browns pass rush to pin back their ears and get to the Quarter Back and I do think Deshaun Watson is going to be under siege for much of the afternoon. There is no doubting this is a top Quarter Back capable of making plays, but he will need to take care throwing into this Cleveland Secondary which has been performing at a pretty good level too.

I definitely rate Deshaun Watson more than Baker Mayfield, but the Cleveland Quarter Back looks to have a lot more support around him at the moment. With the Defensive unit likely going to be making some big plays to slow down Watson and Houston, the Offense has been boosted with key returns on the Offensive Line as well as the backfield.

The Offensive Line has a couple of starters returning and set to be fresh off the Bye Week, while Nick Chubb has been reactivated having been placed on the short IR list and will give Cleveland a real dual threat at Running Back along with Kareem Hunt. Handing the ball off to Chubb and Hunt might be as taxing as things get for Mayfield for much of the afternoon as a healthy Offensive Line paves the way for some big gains against a Houston Defensive Line allowing an average of 5.9 yards per carry over their last three games.

The conditions may see Houston play much closer to the line of scrimmage to at least slow down the Browns, but Hunt in particularly is a threat catching the ball out of the backfield. All in all I do think Baker Mayfield will be given more third and manageable spots than Deshaun Watson and this Houston Secondary has struggled for the big plays all season which should mean Cleveland are moving the ball more effectively than Houston.

Even the Houston pass rush may struggle to get things going with teams being able to pound the rock against them and I do like the Browns to win and cover coming out of their Bye.

They don't have the best record in that spot, but Cleveland are 5-2-1 against the spread in their last eight as the home favourite. The Texans have not covered in their last seven as the underdog and in none of their last four as the road underdog, while the favourite is 6-2 against the spread in the last eight between Cleveland and Houston.

The Browns have tended to beat the teams they should so far this season and I think that is the case here too. I am a little concerned with the spread being over the key number 3, especially in the windy conditions that are set to affect this game, but I think Cleveland can make the plays to see them win this by around a Touchdown when all is said and done.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Carolina Panthers Pick: I won't even begin to try and explain what happened on Monday Night Football when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were blown out at home by the New Orleans Saints. Things started badly and they never recovered for the Buccaneers, but at 6-3 they are firmly in the race to reach the post-season and Tom Brady will have spent a week itching to get back on the field and make amends.

It was some poor play from the Quarter Back and the rest of the Offensive unit which gave Tampa Bay's Defensive unit little to no chance to have any success in slowing down the New Orleans Saints. They should expect a more manageable time against the Carolina Panthers who have lost Christian McCaffrey for at least one more game having had him return in the narrow loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

They may have a 3-6 record and the Panthers have lost four in a row, but during that time they have found the motivation to play the Saints and the Kansas City Chiefs very close. It won't take much to get the team ready to go against the other big rival in the 2020 NFC South and that makes Carolina a team that has to be respected.

However, Teddy Bridgewater and his team-mates have to know this Tampa Bay Defensive unit is stronger than the Chiefs one they played last week. For starters the Buccaneers have remained pretty stout against the run for much of the season and I do think Mike Davis will find it very difficult to establish the ground game and at least put Bridgewater in a manageable situation to try and keep the chains moving.

Misdirection and sweeps should at least help Carolina on the ground, but it will be largely down to their Quarter Back to keep the successes going with any consistency. Teddy Bridgewater should have some successes, but he will have to be aware of the Tampa Bay pass rush which could force him to hurry his throws into a Secondary which has made the big play even if we did not see that last week.

I expect the entire Defensive unit to come out and make a statement, but the same can be said of the Tampa Bay Offensive unit which struggled to do anything effective in their blow out loss last time out. Tom Brady is not used to being down by big margins like he was at half time last week and especially not at home, but the Buccaneers have responded in the right way by winning their next game by big margins following the first two defeats of the season.

Bruce Arians is still looking for his team to find an effective running game to ease the pressure on their veteran Quarter Back, but Ronald Jones and Leonard Fournette have been lacking the consistency needed. It doesn't feel like either will get on track in this one, but the Buccaneers will try and stay balanced and that will give Tom Brady an opportunity to attack a Secondary giving up some big numbers.

Tom Brady has been well protected by his Offensive Line and Carolina have not really generated much of a pass rush which should mean the Quarter Back has time to make his plays. There are a vast amount of weapons at Brady's disposal and I do expect to see the team singing off the same song-sheet much more than they were in Week 9.

Plays through the air should set Tampa Bay up for a big win on the road and to get back on track.

They beat Carolina by 14 points the week after losing to New Orleans earlier in the season and the road team is 9-4 against the spread in the last thirteen in this NFC South Divisional series. Tampa Bay are 9-2-1 against the spread in their last twelve games following a defeat by double digits at home and Tom Brady has regularly bounced back off a loss.

Carolina in general have played well as the underdog, but they are only 1-4-1 against the spread in their last six as the HOME underdog and I will look for Tampa Bay to remind those watching there is still more to come from them.

Denver Broncos @ Las Vegas Raiders Pick: Late Defensive plays inside their own End Zone helped the Las Vegas Raiders just about edge out the Los Angeles Chargers and move to 5-3 in the AFC West. This is another Divisional game for the Raiders as they host the Denver Broncos who fell to 3-5 in Week 9, but Las Vegas have to make sure they are fully focused and not thinking about their second meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs.

I have to think Jon Gruden would have made his team well aware that any PlayOff place could be earned or lost depending on the kind of focus they have in games like this one. The Raiders are going to be in a battle to earn a Wild Card spot assuming they will not be able to close the gap to the Chiefs leading the AFC West and that means every game is very important to Las Vegas.

Getting into the PlayOffs looks a long shot for the Denver Broncos who needed a late rally to beat the Los Angeles Chargers before coming up short with another rally in their defeat to the Atlanta Falcons. Injuries on the Defensive Line have been a problem for the Broncos, but Drew Lock and the Offensive unit have to like their match up with the Raiders Defensive unit and I think that will at least give Denver a chance to keep this one competitive.

You have to credit the Las Vegas Defensive Line for looking like they have stepped forward to find a way to clamp down on the run in recent games, but slowing down the Denver Broncos will not be easy. Melvin Gordon and Philipp Lindsay are both capable of breaking runs behind the Denver Defensive Line and they should at least put Drew Lock in third and manageable spots and give the young Quarter Back a chance for success.

There has been little to no pass rush being brought to the field by the Raiders and that should also be important for Drew Lock to locate Receivers down the field. The Las Vegas Secondary is still making some mistakes when it comes to protecting against the pass and even the late plays to stop the Chargers beating them last week should not paper over those issues so I am expecting Drew Lock and the Broncos to have some success Offensively which will give them the chance of earning the upset.

Running the ball may be the method in which the Las Vegas Raiders look to get the ball rolling downfield too, although you do have to wonder how they are going to cope with all of the injuries they have on the Offensive Line. It didn't really affect the Raiders against the Chargers last week and so I am expecting Josh Jacobs and his fellow Running Backs to have a good chance of moving the ball on the ground in this one too.

Denver's Defensive Line have not really played the run very well and they have plenty of injuries to deal with on that Line in Week 10. That should give the home team their opportunity to keep the chains moving and also help out Derek Carr who can use play-action to open things up down the field.

He will need to be operating in third and manageable spots to ease the Denver pass rush with Head Coach Vic Fangio insistent on throwing the blitz at opponents to cover up the injuries on the Defensive Line. It has worked at times and may give Derek Carr something to think about in this game, but there are holes in the Denver Secondary which may take a couple of weeks to sharpen up now key players have returned to fill those.

With that in mind I do think Las Vegas are the more likely winners of this game, but I still believe Denver will have a chance to cover while this line is above a key number. Las Vegas are 1-5 against the spread in their last six home games going back to their time in Oakland, while Denver are 5-1 against the spread in their last six following a loss and they are 7-3 against the spread in their last ten as the road underdog.

I am not convinced Drew Lock is the franchise Quarter Back Denver may hope he is, but I do think he can do enough to help the Broncos cover as the underdog here.

NFL Week 10 Picks 2015 (November 12-16)

It has been another week where some late finishes have meant it has been difficult to get my normal Weekly Recap thread out for the NFL.

However, it is still a good moment to say that the NFL Picks moved back into the positive direction last week after four straight losing weeks had taken down the season totals. Week 9 proved to be a very strong week with the picks going 6-2 and one of the losing picks being only given a small interest which has meant a very good week all in all.

There are still eight weeks of the regular season to go so the season is far from secure in going in a certain direction, but hopefully another few winning weeks are coming up over the next few weeks.

Week 10 Picks
So as I have mentioned, Week 9 proved to be a good one for the picks, but Week 10 is quickly upon us and opens with a big AFC East battle which could have all sorts of Play Off implications come the end of the season.

The rest of the picks will be out in the next couple of days so remember to check back to catch those prior to the Sunday games.

Buffalo Bills @ New York Jets Pick: There is no doubting that is a critical portion of the Buffalo Bills season as they came out of a break to face three straight Divisional rivals. The bye week meant Buffalo could restore some of their bigger players on the Offensive side of the ball and that helped them overcome the Miami Dolphins, but a short week might mean a couple of banged up bodies to take into this big road game at the New York Jets.

Following this one, Rex Ryan will get his second chance to try and knock off the New England Patriots, but that game is Monday Night Football in Week 11 which means the team can focus fully on this game. And don't forget Ryan was fired by the New York Jets at the end of last season and most certainly would have circled his first game against them which happens to be on Thursday Night Football this week.

The public are siding with the small home favourite, which isn't a surprise, but I think the Buffalo Bills have enough to win this one outright considering they have won 4 of the last 5 against the Jets. Of course things have changed on both sidelines, but Buffalo looked healthier against the Dolphins and I think they are the slightly better team.

LeSean McCoy and Sammy Watkins are both still dealing with injuries, but both should be available today and you know Rex Ryan has given away some of the secrets of the New York Jets Defense to his team for this one. As well as the Jets have done shutting down the run, I am expecting Buffalo to use the right packages to make sure McCoy, Karlos Williams and Tyrod Taylor can exploit this top run Defense.

It won't be easy at all, but Buffalo can have success on that side of the ball while Taylor seems to be a much more reliable Quarter Back than EJ Manuel. He is capable of making some big throws to keep the Jets from loading the box and I think Ryan's insight into this Defensive unit is going to be huge for the Bills.

While the Bills have got healthier, the New York Jets are a little more banged up with issues on the Offensive Line, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brandon Marshall also carrying injuries. It would have been a difficult match up for Fitzpatrick if fully healthy, but the fact he isn't going to have a lot of help from Chris Ivory into keeping the team in third and manageable situations is a real problem with the Quarter Back having a thumb injury too.

The lack of pressure up front has been a concern for the Bills and New York have a solid protection for Fitzpatrick, but Buffalo did pick up a couple of sacks last week. With Ivory struggling, Fitzpatrick might need more time for his Receivers to get further down field and he could be under pressure when trying to find Marshall and Eric Decker.

The Jets are not a great home favourite to back and they are just 4-12-1 against the spread as the home favourite in Divisional games. They are just 2-4 against the spread when favoured by three points or less while Buffalo are 8-5 against the spread when set as a three point or less underdog. Add in the fact that the Bills are 10-5 against the spread in recent Divisional games and you have to like Buffalo on Thursday Night Football.

Rex Ryan's knowledge of the New York Jets Defensive unit, better health for Buffalo, the teams recent records in this spot all seems to add up to the road team being the team to back. The public are on the home team, but the sharps have taken this spread down over the last couple of days so take the points while they are still there and back Buffalo to cover.

Detroit Lions @ Green Bay Packers Pick: After consecutive losses to two of the better teams in the NFL on the road, the Green Bay Packers are not panicking about their chances to win the Super Bowl this season. There will be some concern about how the Defense played and the struggles of the Offensive unit to get unplugged.

It has to be remembered that the Green Bay Packers were up against Denver and Carolina who have to be two of the better Defensive units in the NFL. The Detroit Lions don't really fit into that category so I am expecting a big bounce back game from Aaron Rodgers and the Packers in the comforts of Lambeau Field.

The sharps don't really believe the same and despite all the public money being on the Green Bay Packers, this spread has steadily moved down below ten points from an opening line of thirteen points. I do think the sharp reaction is to take the double digit points where possible out of principle, especially as the Detroit Lions may have used the bye week to fix some serious issues they have had.

I am not sure they have been able to do that though with rumours that Jim Caldwell is next of the high profile firings the team have been conducting in the last two weeks. Matthew Stafford's future is very much in the air at Quarter Back and the Lions are virtually out of the Play Off picture already in what has been a really disappointing season.

Caldwell has led his teams to a 4-1 record against the spread off a bye week, but how much preparation can anyone have done with the Sword of Democles hanging over your head?

I am expecting Stafford to have success in this game throwing the ball, even if Calvin Johnson is a little banged up, because the Green Bay Secondary has a few injuries to deal with. However, the Green Bay pass rush will be able to get through the Offensive Line and take down Stafford, while the Quarter Back has been given little to no support from the run game which makes it even harder for him from third and long.

While Stafford will have a decent statistical day, the Green Bay Offense should be a lot more balanced which usually means more of a consistent chance of moving the chains. The Lions might be reliant on Stafford, but Green Bay have given Aaron Rodgers a decent running game to complement his passing and that has allowed the Packers to move the chains barring the last couple of games.

Even against Carolina they got unplugged as the day wore on, but this Detroit Defense is not up to that level. James Starks has taken over as the number one Running Back on the depth chart and he could have a huge game in this one against a Defense allowing 4.5 yards per carry. That is more likely with the Lions selling out to stop Aaron Rodgers from carving them up and will eventually allow the Quarter Back to use play-action or bootleg passes to hit the Secondary down the field.

Detroit are able to get some pressure up front, but not if Green Bay are running the ball effectively too and I like the Packers to win this game going away.

The Lions have failed to cover the spread in their last four visits to Lambeau Field while Green Bay are 9-2 against the spread in their last 11 Divisional home games. They might not have covered last week, but Green Bay are 6-3 against the spread coming off a loss as the favourite and I like them this week.

Carolina Panthers @ Tennessee Titans Pick: The Carolina Panthers look the team to beat in the NFC South, but wins over both the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers suggest all roads to the Super Bowl will have to travel through Charlotte. It would be easy to suggest this is a bad spot for the Panthers because they are coming off a big win over the Packers and now go on the road to face a non-Conference opponent, but I have to side with the public on this one.

The Tennessee Titans are due to play a Divisional game on Thursday Night Football this week, although they aren't good enough to be looking past any opponent. If that was against either Houston or Indianapolis I would put more stock on the scheduling, but I am not sure the Titans respect Jacksonville enough while the chance to beat an unbeaten opponent is hard to ignore.

It was an impressive road win over one NFC South team last week that will give Tennessee some momentum, but coming off a tough win in Overtime can be difficult for some teams. Marcus Mariota played well in that game, but I am not sure he has the same success going up against this Carolina Defense which is loads better than the unit the New Orleans Saints put on the field.

There might be a little bit of run support offered to Marcus Mariota at Quarter Back, but he will still have to do plenty of work himself which will be difficult. For the first time in a couple of weeks, Mariota should be put under immense pressure from the Carolina pass rush and this Offensive Line has struggled to protect their mobile Quarter Back so drives are likely to stall and turnovers could be created.

I am not suggesting it will be an easy day for the Panthers Offense though because Tennessee have actually played pretty well Defensively for much of the season. Jonathan Stewart will have some success moving the ball with his legs and Cam Newton is a real threat to do that even if he is now becoming more of a pocket passer that has shown his growth as a Quarter Back.

Interceptions have been something of an issue for Newton, but he has still played well with a mishmash set of Receivers outside of Greg Olsen and he has to be credited for that. Newton should be able to connect with his Receivers if Carolina are effective running the ball as Tennessee might load the box to stop that happening meaning more one on one match ups in the Secondary.

Carolina haven't been a great road favourite to back in past seasons but they are 2-0 against the spread this season and the number here has moved down to a respectable level. The Titans are just 3-7-1 against the spread as the home underdog in recent seasons and they may struggle to back up an Overtime success from last week especially knowing the short week is ahead.

One worry I mentioned was the Panthers coming off a huge win over Green Bay. However, they won that as the underdog and have now gone 5-2 against the spread following an upset win so may still feel disrespected which should maintain focus and help them win this one by a Touchdown.

Chicago Bears @ St Louis Rams Pick: A solid run of games which have seen the Chicago Bears go 3-2 has encouraged Kyle Long to speak up about the chances of making the Play Offs. There is still a lot of work to do to get the Bears into such a position, but injuries on the Offensive side of the ball could be tough to overcome against one of the best Defenses in the NFL.

Jay Cutler has avoided the seriously big mistakes that have hampered his game over the years and he looks very comfortable in Adam Gase's Offense. However, Cutler is likely going to have to go without Matt Forte and Alshon Jeffery, the two biggest playmakers on the team, and that is a big problem.

Jeremy Langford played well in relief of Forte last week, but the Rams have become much stouter against the run and are certainly better than the San Diego Chargers on that front. It will be tough for the Bears to establish the run and that means Jay Cutler could be left in third and long which will only encourage a vicious pass rush to get after him.

While I have seen Cutler get the ball out much quicker in recent games, he will still have to deal with a strong pass rush all around him. That could lead to mistakes from the Quarter Back as well as seeing the St Louis Rams force the Bears to convert some big third downs under pressure and the home team can use that to their advantage.

The Rams have certainly felt a lot more comfortable since Todd Gurley returned and opened up his NFL career showing he could be a feature back here for years to come. Gurley should have plenty of chances to establish the run in this one against a Chicago Bears Defense giving up 121 yards per game at 4.6 yards per carry.

I am fully expecting Gurley to rip off some big gains which will only relieve the pressure on Nick Foles who has been unable to really get a feel for throwing the ball around for St Louis. Foles should have a pretty clean pocket to throw from, but his Receivers are not the most reliable bunch although I am looking for him to have success as Chicago look to find a way to shut down Gurley.

This is a big spread when you think the Bears have been very competitive in recent weeks even in their two losses. However, missing Jeffery and Forte is huge and St Louis have improved to blow out two overmatched teams in their last two games at home as the favourite.

A couple of big runs from Gurley and a strong Defensive effort should see the home team come through and win this one by at least a Touchdown.

Miami Dolphins @ Philadelphia Eagles Pick: Playing a third consecutive road game is never an easy task in the NFL, but the Miami Dolphins have to do it having lost consecutive games in Divisional games. Now they are on the road at a non-Conference opponent and I do wonder if the Dolphins are perhaps out of ideas after a very positive beginning under Interim Head Coach Dan Campbell.

The one concern for the Philadelphia Eagles has to be the manner of their win last week against the Dallas Cowboys, a game they won in Overtime thanks to a long Touchdown pass from Sam Bradford to Jordan Matthews. That was an emotional win and puts them back in contention in the NFC East and the worry has to be that they come out flat this week.

The Eagles will certainly be tested by this Miami Offense as long as the Dolphins are close and can feed the ball to Lamar Miller. The Running Back has played well the last few weeks and will likely find some holes against this Philadelphia Defensive Line which is going to be huge to keep Ryan Tannehill in manageable spots.

I am not a big fan of Tannehill because I simply don't think he has the confidence to look down the field to find Receivers. With Philadelphia banged up at Linebacker and in the Secondary, the Dolphins may think they can have some success throwing the ball, but they have to protect Tannehill better than they did last week against Buffalo.

Ja'Wuan James remains a big piece out of the Offensive Line so Philadelphia may get some real pressure on Tannehill when he does drop back and throw. Miami will also miss the presence of Cameron Wake on the Defensive Line and Philadelphia could easily pick up from where they left off last week against the banged up Cowboys Defense.

Both DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews have shown they can run the ball in this Eagles Offense over the last month following a poor start. I expect both of those players to have their successes against a Miami team giving up 4.5 yards per carry and who were gashed by LeSean McCoy, Tyrod Taylor and Karlos Williams last week.

Establishing the run makes life easier for Sam Bradford to hit his Receivers down the field, even if the Quarter Back isn't ideal for this system with his lack of mobility following his knee issues. However, Bradford has looked decent with time and I think the Eagles will give him enough to take shots against a Secondary that hasn't looked good for most of the season.

The Bradford Interceptions have to be a real concern, but I do think the Eagles can back up a big win on the road last week by producing one here. However, the emotional let down spot and this being a non-Conference game means I will only stick with a single unit on this game.

Miami have also been a strong road team in non-Divisional games which adds to the concern in this pick, but Philadelphia are the better team. I think the third road game in a row spot is a difficult one for Miami and I do think key injuries on both Offensive and Defensive Lines are hard to ignore.

Minnesota Vikings @ Oakland Raiders Pick: These two teams have to be the surprising Play Off contenders in both Conferences this season, but the Oakland Raiders likely need this win much more than the Minnesota Vikings. To be fair to the latter, they are still very much in the mix of an NFC North Divisional battle with the Green Bay Packers and it is the fact that they are facing the Packers for the first time next week which makes me think they overlook this game.

That spot makes the Oakland Raiders more appealing and I certainly think the Raiders are one of the more under-rated teams in the NFL even if they have a 4-4 record which isn't eye-catching.

Teddy Bridgewater was knocked out of the win over the St Louis Rams last week, but he looks to have passed the concussion protocol and is expected to start in this one. He will have the benefit of handing the ball to Adrian Peterson to rip off yards on the ground, but Oakland have played the run fairly effectively for much of the season and may force the Quarter Back to beat them.

If Bridgewater was 100%, you would think he can have success against a team that is likely missing Charles Woodson. The Minnesota passing game has been a little up and down all season, but Oakland have a Secondary that can be hurt through the air and I think Bridgewater will have some solid moments throwing the ball in this one.

However, the injury last week is an issue here as well as the fact he has to compete with Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders in this tough spot with Green Bay on deck. Carr is able to get the ball out of his hands quickly and he has the luxury of throwing to Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper who have both been very good Receivers for him through the season.

Those three players can hook up for some big gains in this one and I think Oakland will have success throwing the ball. The Raiders are also likely boosted by the fact that Latavius Murray looks to be passing the concussion protocol and is likely to take his place as the starting Running Back. Murray has run the ball effectively all season and now takes on a Vikings team giving up 4.5 yards per carry on the year.

The balanced Offense should see the Raiders move the chains effectively for much of the game and I do really like Oakland to win in this spot. Minnesota have that big game up next and won last week in Overtime which can have an impact even a week later.

Minnesota have been a solid road underdog to back, but the spot is a big one and I will back Oakland to find the right plays to win this one at home by at least a Field Goal.

Kansas City Chiefs @ Denver Broncos Pick: The Kansas City Chiefs are far from out of the Play Off picture in the AFC, but they come out of their bye knowing how important the next four weeks could be. In that time they face all three Divisional rivals on the road and the Wild Card spots may easily be decided between them and the Oakland Raiders so those games are going to be huge for them down the stretch.

First they have to take on the Denver Broncos who are coming off their first loss of the season when a couple of bonehead plays late cost them a chance to beat the Indianapolis Colts. Peyton Manning started off badly, but played better after the half although I am still far from convinced of his chances of leading the Broncos to another Super Bowl.

The future Hall of Fame Quarter Back still has moments of looking like his old self, but too many bad throws haven't helped his cause. I still think Manning can have a big game against the Kansas City Chiefs Defense which has struggled to get the pressure up front that they may have liked while also likely doing with Tamba Hali this week.

That lack of consistent pressure has allowed Quarter Backs to attack this Secondary and Manning should have some success. However, he has the habit of throwing some filthy balls at the moment and I wouldn't be surprised if the Chiefs are able to produce an Interception or two in this one which could be critical. It will be down to Manning's arm as the Chiefs have been good against the run while Denver have struggled to establish the run all season so it comes down to what Kansas City can do with their turnovers.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, I am not sure how they are going to consistently move the chains even with DeMarcus Ware and Aqib Talib out for this Denver Defense. The Chiefs are missing Jamaal Charles and Jeremy Maclin has looked a little banged up while Alex Smith has been under siege up front through the season, something that even Ware's absence shouldn't affect as much as suspected.

Denver have been very strong against the run all season that it is hard to see a Charles-less Kansas City team establishing the run. That means Smith has to sit in third and long behind this porous Offensive Line and the Broncos can get the pressure up front to at least stall drives even if Smith is taking care of the ball effectively.

I like the Broncos to have a little too much on both sides of the ball for the Chiefs in this and you have to remember Kansas City are 0-3 against the spread as the road underdog this season. Denver have dominated the Chiefs by going 5-1 against the spread in the last six games between these teams and the Broncos are 6-3 against the spread in home games against Divisional opponents since Peyton Manning joined the team.

Manning might not be the same player these days, but I think the Defensive unit play their part in what will be a win by around a Touchdown.

New England Patriots @ New York Giants Pick: Over the years the New York Giants have been a thorn in the New England Patriots side which has seen them beat them in two Super Bowls as well as ending an unbeaten season at the big game. Overall the Giants have now won three in a row against the Patriots, and New England come into the game as the unbeaten powerhouse that is looking to win it all.

There aren't too many more roadblocks for the Patriots to go through the regular season unbeaten for the second time in the past decade, but this is one game that could give them plenty of problems. Despite the size of the spread, the public are absolutely hammering the New England Patriots, but I want to go against them here against a team that has taken pride in being able to do what so many others have failed to.

With Tom Brady playing as well as he is and Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski catching passes, it is easy to be seduced by the Patriots and wonder how they will be beaten. Brady is so smart and quick with his passes and this New York Giants Secondary has been pretty atrocious when it comes down to it. That is partly down to injury and not helped by a limited pass rush, but Jason Pierre-Paul is back having played last week and the Giants should get some pressure on Brady.

It might not matter much as Brady can quickly decipher what is being put in front of him so I expect him to have his success throwing the ball. LeGarrette Blount has become the main feature Running Back thanks to Dion Lewis' injury last week, but he should be able to establish the run against this Giants team that has worn down up front, while James White will take Lewis's catching role out of the backfield.

I fully expect the Patriots to move the ball well and score their points, but the New York Giants are capable of matching them in a shoot out as they showed in New Orleans a couple of weeks ago. The Giants have scored at least twenty-four points in all but two games this season and have a player in Odell Beckham that can make the big plays for them.

Rueben Randle and Larry Donnell have played their part in the passing game as has Dwayne Harris, while Eli Manning is arguably playing as well as any time in his career. Manning has also been given time to make his throws and that could be key against an under-rated New England Secondary that might lack stars but not playmakers.

Rashad Jennings has to find a way to get something consistent going on the ground but Eli Manning hasn't had that all season and has made the big plays. His Receivers, particularly Beckham, are capable of winning their battles and getting open as long as the Giants can continue to give Manning time to make his throws.

The Giants have been a poor underdog recently, but they can throw the kitchen sink at the Patriots knowing they are on a bye next week. New England have enough time to prepare for the disliked Rex Ryan and Buffalo rematch next week on Monday Night Football, but you can't ignore they are 3-8 against the spread as the road favourite and this looks a big number to cover.

It is every chance we see a shoot-out on Sunday, but one that offers the Giants every opportunity for a backdoor cover at worst. I'll take the points here.

Houston Texans @ Cincinnati Bengals Pick: Monday Night Football has been dominated by the underdogs this season with those teams going 8-2 against the spread heading into this Week 10. Last week I had backed the underdog Chicago Bears to cover the spread in San Diego and won straight up so perhaps backing the underdog is the right move this week?

Not for me though.

The Houston Texans have a couple of things going for them in that they are coming off a bye week and are facing a Cincinnati Bengals team that have played two Divisional rivals in a row. However, the Bengals played on Thursday Night Football in Week 9 and so they have had plenty of time to rest and get ready for this game so I like the home team to move to 9-0 for the season.

It has felt different for the Bengals this season as they look a team that might finally break their search for a Play Off win. Andy Dalton looks mature and is making less critical mistakes, while he no longer loses all confidence if he does make a mistake.

Dalton should have the time to make some big plays against this Secondary behind this Offensive Line, but that will only increase if Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard can use their one-two punch on the ground. The power and speed combination will see the Bengals keep the team in third and manageable spots which is where Dalton should thrive with the weapons at his disposal and it will be hard for the Texans to slow them down.

The Defensive Line hasn't been as productive as Houston would have liked and it will be tough to slow down the Cincinnati Offense with the way they have all been on the same page this season.

And I do wonder if the Texans are able to keep up in this one with Arian Foster out and the Offensive Line struggling to break open running lanes. They should have some success because that has been a weakness of the Cincinnati Defense but it is more likely that Brian Hoyer is throwing from third and long which is where this Bengals pass rush should come into their own.

There will be times Houston are able to move the chains too, but I expect the Bengals Defense to make a few big plays which will give their Offense the chance to win this one going away. Cincinnati have improved to 11-3-2 against the spread as the home favourite over the last two and a half seasons and the Texans are just 1-3 against the spread as the road underdog this season.

It is a big number to cover, but teams who are 8-0 have gone 9-3 against the spread in nationally televised games (thanking another source for that brilliant stat) and I think the Bengals prove too good. Houston being prepared for two weeks is a concern as is the chance of the books losing some decent money this week, but I like the Bengals here and feel they win by around fourteen points.
