There isn't too much time to go before the start of the Barclays Premier League season as well as the College Football and the National Football League, but I will still be making some picks from the Major League Baseball games if there is something that catches my eye.
It has been a mixed bag of a season with one terrible month, one mediocre month, one decent month and one great month so let's hope August brings good fortunes.

MLB July Picks
I didn't make too many picks in the Major League Baseball last month as the Euro 2012 tournament as well as the tennis tournaments at the French Open and Wimbledon took up most of my time.
I have kept tabs on what has been happening and this is usually when the MLB gets a little more exciting as we reach the second half of the season.
As always, I probably won't make picks every day, but only when I feel we have a slight edge over the layers and I am hoping for better fortunes this month.
Any time I make new picks, I will post a link to this page on my Twitter page and let's hope for a solid July.

I am not making any picks today after the terrible run of bad breaks yesterday which saw two of the teams I picked actually out-hitting their opponents but falling to late defeats.
The Mets gave up three runs at the bottom of the eighth to lose by one run, Washington had more hits but also lost by one run, while Detroit had the same number of hits as Baltimore but lost in extra innings.
I'll take a break for today after that run of results(!)

MLB Picks June
It was a truly tragic month for the picks from the Major League last month as 'Awesome April' moved into 'Miserable May'.
So many times it seemed the breaks were just not coming and so I decided to take the rest of the month off after May 24th and went so far as to keep an eye on scores going into June. The French Open tennis has pre-occupied my thoughts early this month anyway, so the Major League picks will be made intermittently when I get something I like and have researched properly.
Here is hoping for a decent June after the horrific last month.

It was a bad end to April, and a pretty shocking start to May, that led me to think I need to take a mini-break from the baseball and have a look at my methods of making picks. April as a whole was a successful month and I did wonder if I had perhaps taken my eye off the ball and perhaps started ignoring vital statistics that I had used to make the month so profitable. With that said, I took a week to analyse my picks and feel pretty good coming off that break.

I took a few days off from the Major Leagues as I just felt the rub of the green was not going for me... The final straw was the FOUR errors that led to FIVE runs against the Detroit Tigers, and that was a sure sign I needed a break from the bad luck.

Just when you think it can't get any worse than a 4 error, 5 unearned run performance, the Philadelphia Phillies decided to out-hit the Red Sox, but leave 9 runners on base, 8 in scoring positions, ground into 3 rally killing double plays, and Joe Blanton gave up 4 Home Runs after allowing 2 in his first 8 starts... That is called pissing somebody off and getting absolutely no luck, urghhh.
I didn't have time to write full previews today as the late finish of the Lakers-Thunder game last night meant I was catching up on sleep, and the Major Leagues are starting early. Still, there is at least 3 hours till the first match starts and the picks can be found in the section below... Here's hoping for a change of fortunes.

It was a bad end to April, and a pretty shocking start to May, that led me to think I need to take a mini-break from the baseball and have a look at my methods of making picks. April as a whole was a successful month and I did wonder if I had perhaps taken my eye off the ball and perhaps started ignoring vital statistics that I had used to make the month so profitable. With that said, I took a week to analyse my picks and feel pretty good coming off that break.

MLB Picks August 5th
I have taken a few days off from the MLB picks as I could not really see much value in the markets, but I feel we have a chance with some picks tonight:
Atlanta Braves @ New York Mets: I am picking the inconsistent Braves to win this game tonight as they have a real edge on the mound in the form of Tim Hudson, even if the pitcher has struggled against the Mets this season.
Atlanta have seen their lead in the Wild Card race reduced following a 10-10 record since the All-Star break, but the Mets are struggling for runs and the Braves have one of the better batting line ups that is capable of putting up a lot of runs and that could be the difference.
Detroit Tigers @ Kansas City Royals: The Tigers can keep a lead in the American League Central by beating the basement team in the Division in this series, and they will have a great chance of Rick Porcello can extend his form from July and pick up his 3rd consecutive win at Kansas City.
Felipe Paulino has had a hard time with the Royals in recent outings as they have not given him the run support, but the whole offense has been batting better in recent games.
Detroit are 3-1 in Kansas City this season and they could extend that here.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs LA Dodgers: The biggest concern I have here is whether Joshua Collmenter can return to form after struggling in his recent outings. He was tagged by the Dodgers last week, but the rookie did pitch well against them in his first start.
Chad Billingsley took a bit of a beating last week in his outing against Arizona and he has been inconsistent in his recent starts, alternating wins and losses.
He did pitch well against the Diamondbacks when losing to Collmenter earlier this season and I will go with the rookie to help Arizona get over the line here.

MLB Picks August 1st
As I said yesterday, I am going to put my picks down in the blog even though the main previews will still be written on the goonersguide site.
With the MLB picks, I am not going to make long reasons behind the picks that I have not put on that site, simply because of time constraints, but you can take it from me that I have studied the picks before putting them on here:

CC Sabathia has been brilliant when pitching in August, and has been superb in recent starts for the Yankees. Derek Jeter is unlikely to play tonight, but the Yankees are 17-5 without him this season.

Atlanta send Jair Jurrjens to the mound and he has been effective all season. The Braves have also in pole position for a Wild Card spot in the National League and could take advantage of Livan Hernandez who takes the ball for Washington and has struggled in August throughout his career.
